Never take life casually

A woman, going through separation proceedings with her husband after 5 years of married life, posed the following questions: One, why do I have to face marital separation despite scoring a good marital matching (25.5 counts) with my partner? Two, though the coming together of Jupiter and Moon is generally identified with a well meaning person, how come it proves otherwise in case of my husband as he has come out to be a very angry person, with an inflated ego? Three, does Bhakuta Dosha lead to marital separation?

I wish to enlighten the lady that point scoring system of marital matching is not complete by itself. Going by the rules of the game, it is just the first step.  The more important thing is to look into the personality traits of the prospective partners. For, in any relationship, attitudes count the most and that comes into full play once the partners settle down in marriage. However, the irony remains that the parents, in their rush to discharge their obligations to marry off their daughter in time, often do not care to take note of the personality traits, if the matching scores sufficient points.

True, scoring 25.5 matching counts sounds fairly good. But, the sad part of the story is that even after scoring 32 out of 36 counts, marriages have failed, particularly in cases where the attitudes of the prospective partners cross path with each other. So it happened in her case as well.

Now let us come to the question of implications of Jupiter and Moon conjunction. It is true that when seen in isolation, it does imply the person being well-meaning. But it is also important to look at the modifying influences exercised by other planets that aspect them. In this particular case, fiery Mars, having acquired further devilry due to its conjunction with restive Rahu and mischievous Neptune, adversely aspects both Jupiter and Moon. The implication is that the boy’s ego level would be very high; he will blindly pursue his own line of thinking, without caring about others. His anger level, too, is high and most unpredictable. The worst is that in the heat of moment, he will lose all self-control. And, the irony is that it was clearly pointed out well in advance to the girl’s family. It was also very clearly indicated that in a sudden turn of events, she may have to face marital turbulence due to interference of the in-law’s beginning November 2011. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that the lady was slapped with the separation notice exactly as predicted. Had the girl’s side taken serious note of this indication, probably she could have avoided this trauma.

Bhakuta dosha normally does indicate personality mismatch, and, therefore, could lead to separation, but only when the Moon signs of the two are respectively placed 6/8 signs away from each other. However, in this particular case, the Moon signs of the two are favourably placed trine to each other.  So, this dosha would not apply in this case.

The girl had also been advised to work upon her own attitudinal problems before she got married. Otherwise, she may fail to make her marriage work. She was cautioned about her self-opinionated and suspicious nature,  unpredictable mood-swings and her anger level. She had also been suggested processes that could have helped make necessary amends. I wish she would have followed, and her life would have been different.

Now who should be blamed the man or the woman? Finding fault will not do any good to either. It's better to be true to the self, and in that spirit remain conscious about working upon one’s infirmities before it becomes too late. Above all, never take life casually.

Astrology knows no bounds

We all wish to steer through our aspirations with ease and comfort and succeed well in life. For that, we try to put in our best by utilising all resources in hand. Yet, very few are able to make it to the desired destination. And those who fail in their endeavour are rarely prepared to own their failure. They rather try to assuage themselves by finding excuses and blaming destiny. But, what about those few who succeed? Should their success be taken as fruits of their labour or just a favour of fate?

Swami Vivekanand gave a clear answer to this riddle: “You do not fail in life because you are so destined; you fail because you have not strived sufficiently to unfold the best in you”. However, it is easier said than done. For, most of us are bound by limitations of our mind - a carry over from the past - and that accounts for all our failures. And, with our conditioned mind, seldom are we able to identify our own weaknesses dispassionately so as to make way for potentials unfold to their best. It is here that Astrology can do wonders.

The other day a gentleman engaged in philanthropic activities came, asking: "why do I have to suffer despite all the good work I do?" His birth particulars were not available. So, I drew the chart of moment with his question in mind, and all his past, present, and future flashed on the screen in energy frame. The Sun was placed in philosophic sign Sagittarius, duly aspected by benevolent Jupiter. That clearly indicated that he was a forward looking idealistic person having a positive orientation of mind and committed to right conduct.  Karmic Saturn lending support to the Sun meant that he was a born leader, armed with tremendous organising ability with eyes set even to finer details. The 9th lord Saturn, identified with spiritual/religious tendencies, was in exaltation in the 5th house that is synonymous with his past birth acquisitions, and that too trine with psychic Neptune. Even the lagna lord Mercury occupied the constellation owned by Saturn. The linkage of lagna, 5th house,   9th houses, and Neptune, pointed to his strong spiritual urges. That also points to his philanthropic tendencies. The Sun lending favourable aspect to Neptune made him intuitive, imaginative, and visionary. The question now is: Despite having such strong virtues what made him go through rough patches in life? Saturn being ill-disposed towards personality indicator Moon implied that he must have really gone through trying times.

Let us now look at his negatives. Gemini sign rising implies that he lived on his own terms, stuck to his strong ego, as would expansive Jupiter’s adverse placement to a fiery Mars mean. As a consequence, he was not open to listening and bound to his self-conceive notions. The Sun placed adverse to Uranus made him unconventional, tactless, un-diplomatic, and devoid of practical sense. Debilitated Moon, conjunct restive Rahu and Mercury - all three placed adverse to Mars - made him temperamental, moody, restive, irritable, rash, argumentative, and restless. That deprived him with the patience necessary to look at the holistic picture before taking a final call. So, more often than not, he instinctively pursued his fractioned view. The result is there for all to see.

However, the good thing in him is the quality to draw lessons out of his failures, make amends, and keep marching ahead with reformed spirit, as would exchange of Saturn and Venus imply. Jupiter in retrogression separating away from adverse placement to Mars, points that he has tempered down his ego and other infirmities of mind, through conscious efforts. And, the fact that Moon, too, was separating away from adverse placement to Saturn implies that he is coming out of his woes. Therefore, times ahead look bright for him.

Realise your inner talents

We are all born carrying individual specific desire-trends laid down in our minds, coming as they may as carryover of the unfulfilled desires from the past life. As we grow by age and one’s own mind begins opening up, these desire trends literally takes over the thought plane. Our impressionable mind undergoes further modification through tempting environmental influences during the ongoing life. The impressions that finally get firmed up in our minds, condition them one way or the other, which usually determines the way one wishes to set the course of future life.

According as these impressions, one’s mind begins to excite corresponding thoughts, which drive all actions on our part. The fruits of our action, good or bad, will naturally carry the stamping of the way we conduct. In a way, it can be said that we limit the scope our vision in most of the occasions. Further, the irony is that we are not open to look beyond and so, we limit the scope of our growth as well.

Many a times, it so happens that there remain seeds of strong potential, laid down in the deep layers of our minds, that we may not be even aware of, and so go untapped. If somehow we could strike upon these inlaid talents and nurse them well, our lives could become much more rewarding and fulfilling. The question now is: how to get to our unexplored virtues. Our minds are empowered to reach out, provided, we try to transgress the conditioning of mind. The truth, however, remains that usually an ordinary mortal stuck to the seeming world, seldom cares to explore what lies hidden within. It is here that Astrology can do wonders. For, it could dispassionately figure out the basic fabric of one’s making.

A gentleman, keen to know his future promotion prospects, approached me about 15 years back. He was firmly settled with a prestigious company holding an administrative assignment. It was indicated to him that somehow he had landed up in a wrong profession and will not be able to carry on long in his present organisation. He should therefore, prepare himself for a change to avoid the unforeseen discomfort that may be forced upon him later. Once his Venus dasha takes off, he will be in for a shock. For, Venus was placed adverse to the prime mover, the Sun, as well as Karmakaraka Saturn. But, his conditioned mind did not see any logic in the advice, coming as it may with Saturn casting its 10th aspect on the Sun. This combination also brings in a sense of fear. So, being afraid of uncertain future, he was not prepared to compromise the comfort level he was enjoying at that moment. So, he did not pay any heed to the advice.

Exactly as predicted, no sooner had his Venus-Venus-Sun period took off, he was in for a shocker. He got trapped in a battle of envy, and, as fallout, he was unceremoniously laid off. Perforce, he had to explore other avenues. In a state of desperation, he took up a teaching assignment that came his way the first.  But, a man in his early sixties, who had carried on administrative assignment for almost 25 years, he was afraid whether he would fit into the new job.

He was assured that being a born teacher, he will really enjoy his new assignment, much better than the old one.  The pointers are: intelligence and communicative skills signifier Mercury, wisdom-oriented Jupiter, mind indicator Moon, and Ketu signifying his hidden strengths, all together in an intelligent sign Gemini. No wonders, once he joined his new assignment, he realised that he had a natural flair for teaching, and that his heart was closer to academics.  All these made him enjoy it the most. He now regrets why he did not explore this option earlier.

Learn the art of happiness

In nature, convergence of corresponding opposites – positive and negative energy particles – leads to fresh creation. They, however, turn destructive when in clash. This is how the law of nature works following which, creation and destruction has been ongoing phenomenon in nature.

The same trend is in operation in the living world as well. The union of man and woman proves creative, enjoying, and fulfilling. For, they meet up each other’s biological, mental, and emotional voids, as well as logistic needs. Together, they enjoy a wholesome existence. And, when the two get into fight mode, they get into self-undoing mode, as none of the two could ever emerge a winner. Both of them have to necessarily carry along baggage of the past, not easy to contend with. And their children very often become the worst victim for no fault of theirs. The sense of insecurity that creeps into their minds unnerves them badly, the imprints of which carry the potential to affect their future relationships.

A case in point is that of a couple, who felt like dying for each other till they got married. Now in their midlife, after having had children, they are running away from each other, with apparently no scope for a meeting point. The question now is: how is it that the same couple, who were mad for each other, has now been behaving just the opposite?

Before marriage, they got so stuck to each other’s loving gestures.  They were just living in fanciful dream worlds of their own. They had no time to look beyond their exciting present and get to each other’s basic frame of minds, vital to a healthy long term relationship. Once they got settled into marriage, they began taking each other for granted, and then, their true self began to gradually unfold. Both, stuck to their individualistic attitudes, do not seem to care for the aspirations and sensibility of others. Today, their fight is having a telling effect on the whole family, the elders and the children included.

Let us now look at their individualistic attitudes having a cascading effect on their relationship. The man is born in Aries lagna, which accounts for his volatile nature. He is aggressive, impulsive, rash, brash, and would like to live on his own exclusive terms. He jumps to conclusion without applying proper forethought - more so, because intelligence signifier Mercury is locked in unholy alliance with volatile Rahu. As a consequence, he lacks patience, and his fractioned view does not allow him scope to look at the holistic picture. Combust Venus makes him an emotional fool. That makes him emotionally too much touchy and sensitive, whereby he takes even trivial issues to his heart and play them out of proportion. Venus again being conjunct Mars, he would be craving for love all the time. Jupiter locking horns with mischievous Neptune accounts for peculiar self-deceptive beliefs of his own making. Saturn through its retrograde motion looking at headless Ketu in the rear sign makes him an escapist.

The man’s attitudes are confronted by female’s inflated ego, coming as it may with fiery Mars placed opposite the expansive Jupiter. That does not allow her to look at things beyond the parameters of dos and don’ts of her own making. As a consequence, she often misses the finer points underlying an issue and, in the process, loses her sense of objectivity. The Sun, placed adverse to Neptune, makes her stuck to the self-delusions of her own making. Further, the Moon, placed in Saturn owned sign, implies that she is not expressive of her love, in contrast to her demanding husband.

The result is there for all to see. I wish that the two self-reflect, identify and acknowledge their weaknesses, and work upon them. And then, their life will be in all pleasure once again.

The road ahead in 2012

With the dawn of 2012, celebratory fever has naturally overtaken us. We wish each other good on the occasion. It is a good way of relegating the trials and tribulations we went through during the preceding year to history, raising hopes for the future, and taking off with a positive note. On this occasion, I wish the valued readers a very happy and prosperous year ahead.

The truth, however, remains that merely nursing a wish is not going to help us much. We shall have to be well geared up to promptly attend to the opportunities likely to come our way, and take on the emerging challenges in stride. It is therefore, the time to figure out astrologically as to how future is likely to present itself in the coming year.

Astrology, one should know, does not subscribe to the calendar system in common use. It goes by the one drawn in correspondence with periodic motion of the planets, which reflects upon changes in the dynamics of energy-flux excited by nature. The implication of the change is read through progression of slow moving planets vis-à-vis natal chart of the nation, and the chart drawn at the time eclipse in the near past.

Since last June itself, transit Rahu has been closing up with natal Ketu, and vice-versa, falling on Lagna-7th axis of India’s independence chart. This may prove a game changer for the nation in a big way, as it happened earlier during one and half year of similar transits starting 1955, 1974, and 1992.

Following 1955 transit, reorganisation of States took place; the Hindu Code Bill came into being, that settled the property right of the females; Ambedkar (together with a large number of his followers) adopted Budhism, unnerving the sentiments of large Hindu mass; and foundation was laid down for Non-aligned movement during Bandung conference.  Following 1974 transit, the JP movement took off; late Indira Gandhi got unseated from parliament through Allahabad High Court judgment, which followed declaration of Emergency.  In course of the transit beginning in 1992, Babri Masjid demolition rocked the nation, following which, Mumbai bomb blast and country wide communal riots took place.

It is therefore, no surprise that consideration for partition of Andhra Pradesh for creation of a new stat named Telangana is pending final decision.  Proposal is also afoot for trifurcation of Uttar Pradesh.  People belonging to lower classes amongst minorities have already been granted share in the 27% reservation quota marked for the backward classes, sparking a fresh debate on communal lines.

As of now, Saturn in transit casts its 10th aspect over natal Moon of nation’s independence-chart. That points to people’s anguish over misrule by the state authorities. For, in mundane astrology, Moon is identified with masses and general mood of the people at large. Uranus continues to lock horns with Mars in India’s Independence chart. That accounts for ongoing anti-corruption tirade in the country continuing since last year, which may stretch on further. This is a repeat of how it happened in 1989. The above planetary combination also points to many such public agitations on various other issues as well. It further points to the possibility of railway accidents.

What further needs to be noted is the premise set by the Lunar Eclipse that took place on the 10th of December 2011, over which the future of 2012 to a large extend stands. The lagna sub-lord Rahu occupies the sign Scorpio, identified with difficulties, implying that people are at their receiving ends. Rahu again, is posited in the constellation owned by Mercury in retrograde motion, which locks horn with fiery Mars and mischievous Neptune. That points to prevailing sentiment of the people feeling badly cheated and being in an agitated mode.

Jupiter, identified with law makers and the value system, occupies the 10th house identified with the Government in Power. Jupiter is also opposed by exalted Saturn from the 4th house, identified with opposition parties. Saturn points to differences amongst the parliamentarians, and the urge to overthrow the party in power. Mars locks horns with both Jupiter and Saturn. Moon occupying the 11th house identified with parliament, is posited in the constellation owned by Mars, which changes sign with the Sun, the planet identified with the government. All put together point to: (a) continued ruckus in the parliament over major policy issues related to value based governance, the parliamentarians not ready to discuss with an open mind so as to strike an accord. (b) The opposition, sensing overall people’s mood, may play all tricks in their hand to cripple government’s working, and prepare the ground to unseat the government in the next election. However, the 4th sub-lord Venus, identified with mind-set of the opposition, locking horns with afflicted Mercury implies that their own approach being inappropriate, may not be able to find much appeal.

Mars locking horns with both Jupiter and Saturn, point to possibility of terror strike, religious strife, and such uncanny incidents. The eclipse happening in fixed sign also point to possibility of earthquakes.

Finance indicator, Venus, placed adverse to Mercury points to a volatile economy ahead particularly during the early months.  But, as Jupiter gradually moves further to form trine aspect with Venus, economy will begin to look up once again during the later months.

All put together, apparently, the year ahead may look gloomy, but, it also comes with a promise for a better tomorrow.  For, all the turbulence indicated above will finally lead to major policy changes during the year, all intended towards laying down the grounds for better governance in the coming days.  Even more so, because, benevolent Jupiter in the 10th house is placed opposite exalted Saturn, which calls for correction towards the better.  It is therefore, no wonders that Bills on Janlokpal, Food security, Citizen’s charter, Judicial accountability, are all pending consideration of the Parliament.

So, all said and done, the events to follow will set the course of better tomorrow.

The divine intervention

As the year 2011 comes to an end, it’s time now to reflect on the happenings that knocked the nation during the year, draw lessons, and make necessary corrections for a better tomorrow. For, the events to follow in the New Year shall take off on the premise that you set today.

We have witnessed the country going through serious churning. And, as would happen in any churning process, the scum surfaces up first, which when eased out makes way for setting things right. True to that intent, our jails got filled up with top notch politicians, senior bureaucrats, and corporate big-wigs. It points to human greed having grown beyond proportion that led to the ganging up of the politicians-bureaucrats-corporate trio.

The happening was little unusual in the sense that till yesterday, the powers that be, whether political or financial, thought of themselves as unassailable. Till the other day, they could manipulate things to find easy escape goats, on the strength of their clout and money power. And, they continued serving their vested interest with impunity, bleeding the nation, left, right, and in the centre. But this time, they were left with no choice than to face the brawl. The question is why?

The big-wigs, trapped in the hallo of their power, often forget that unseen hands of the Divine, have always in store self-automated provisions to protect the interest of the large existence. It strikes at periodic intervals for course correction, through the exercise of its administrative tool – “the time”. It will be interesting to note that ‘time’, in the Divine plan, is not just a measure of space. Every moment of time reflects the energy flux extended by nature. It will be pertinent to note here that as per the Indian calendar system, all units of time, both in macro and micro scales, are set in correspondence with periodic motion of the Sun and Moon. These luminaries and other planetary bodies moving around the Sun are all energy providers at the frontal level that hold the key to all aspects of our existence. These planetary bodies are always on their run.  This, when seen relative to the earth's spinning at such a great pace, would imply that dynamics of energy flux extended by nature keeps varying every moment widely.

Further, what deserves attention is the fact that all existences in this phenomenal world have come into being through progressive evolution of energy streams flowing through nature. So, the cosmos and the living world remain always connected. It has again been scientifically established that every point of the space remains in immediate and intimate connect with the rest. Therefore, any change in the dynamics of energy flux extended by nature will not pass off, without its rumblings felt by our minds.

No wonder, when Uranus moved to the Pisces sign, wherefrom it locked horns with natal Mars in India’s Independence chart, many scams came out in open, one after the other, leading to huge public protests. Anna Hazare's  agitation against corruption continued throughout the year, which received overwhelming support of conscientious people from all across the country. It will be interesting to note the coincidences in evidence in astrological framework during massive anticorruption protests in the past - 1974 and 1989 to be precise.

In 1989, Uranus was transiting just opposite natal Mars in India’s Independence chart. Saturn then transited opposite natal Mars to further added fuel to the fire, leading to the fall of the then government.  In 1974, Saturn transited over natal Mars, and Uranus locked horns with natal Moon, the planet identified with people’s mood.

Remember, the Divine will not spare you for long, if you continue to passionately pursue your greed.

As you sow, so you reap

A shocking revelation about institutionalized attempt to breed terrorists/hardened criminals, has unnerved all conscientious minds. At least 51 innocent children, at an age, when they are supposed to run around their houses as free birds and when they deserve a tenderly care, were found chained in a seminary. Supposedly, they were kept out of their natural habitat to indoctrinate and mould their untainted mind into a virtual terror machine. How can some one get into such ghastly act? It can be nothing but the handiwork of a sick mind - this is how a civilized world would view this incident. However, when seen from the perspective of a zealot engaged in such a horrendous acts, it is a sacrifice in the service of his personalised God, which will qualify him entry into Zannat (Heaven). This is how his personal belief system runs.

The truth of life is that by and large, the ordinary mortals are all in fetters of their own beliefs that condition and drive their minds one way or the other. Some of these conditionings could be deadly, as evidenced in the above case. The character and content of one’s conditioning of mind is what drives his/her conduct, and that accounts for all acts on our part. These conditionings do not happen by default. One is led to such beliefs and made like that by scheming people.

Fanatics have been consciously doing what they believe is right according to their value systems. But are those engaged in Governance equally conscious about breeding good human beings, by introducing a value-based education system? Nothing of the kind seems to be in sight anywhere in the world, be it a developed or a developing nation. Rather, developed countries have been often found nursing and using terrorist outfits to tame other nations and serve their narrow national interests. That has now begun to boomerang upon and hurt them. See, how ill-conceived means adopted by those, who self-assumed being unassailable, have now become a victim of their own making. Had they been particular about using rightful means, the situation would not have worsened as it exists today.

Even in our day to day lives, it is again individual beliefs and conditionings that remain at the root of all human failings and sufferings. The conditioning of every individual may not be as weird as those of the terror masterminds. But, at the level it exists, it definitely limits the scope of one’s vision, and thereby perceptive and comprehensible abilities of a person. One, thus, fails to visualise things in the right perspective, which leads to unintelligent acts, with obvious consequences.

It is therefore, important to provide in the first place, a good environment and grooming ground to our children. Second, we also need to keep a watch on their mind-trends. And, if there are any undesirable trends in evidence, corrective measures need be taken immediately, before they gravitate into conditioning. Otherwise, that may develop into a perpetual habit. And, habits die hard.

A case in point is that of a young man. He picked up weird beliefs from domestic environment, which progressively grew into habits. And now, the family has no choice than to painfully bear with his idiosyncrasies. For, during early childhood, his bullish trends were ignored as childish prank. On top of that, his grand mother always came to his support, whenever his mother would try to tame his defiant behaviour. The result is there for all to see. The astrological pointers are: First, Uranus, identified with elders, occupies the 4th house synonymous with domestic environment, and is placed adverse to the Sun. Second, mischievous Neptune locks horns with 4th lord Mars, intelligence indicator Mercury, mind signifying Moon, and value system defining planet Jupiter.

Service your mind regularly

My way and no other way”, is the trend that seems to have overtaken most of the minds across the globe. Developed countries, primarily driven by their own vested interests, try to force their way on weak nations. If diplomacy does not work, they feel it within their rights to bully the weaker nations. Religious and political hardliners do not hesitate in killing innocent people to coerce large majorities submitting to their whims and fancies under fear.

Here in India, of late, the opposing political parties seem to have literally made a joke of the parliament, allowing no scope for any healthy debate; governance, thus, has taken a backseat. Social activists, too, behave as self-anointed arbiters of human destiny.  See their audacity, they point fingers on others but when they are being charged of impropriety, they will call it a trick to sabotage their 'noble' efforts. Worse, they even justify the slapping of a minister by a misguided youth. What is the message they are trying to convey? I am afraid, if this type of unbecoming act is glorified by those who can excite the emotions of a large number of people, such open display of hatred will multiply in geometric progression. The end result would be nothing short of anarchy. These self-acclaimed Gandhians have perhaps forgotten that Bapu accorded as much importance to means as to the ends.

The domestic household scenario, too, is no better. Every member of the family lives in a demanding mode at one’s own terms, least concerned about the sensibility and concerns of others. In one’s individualistic hang, it seldom occurs in one’s mind that collective well being provides better grounds for fulfilment of even individual aspirations.

Why have we come down to such a pass despite most of us being better educated and empowered than before? What is even more striking is that this very feeling of empowerment has bred a very strong sense of ego as well.

The reason is simple: As people have been working hard towards improving their skills to secure economic comfort and fortune, they have forgotten to service their minds, as if they have outgrown their limits. Remember, the skills are just tools in hand. How they are to be used depends on the way it is driven by mind. You may be armed with nuclear power. But, whether you use it for generating electricity or making a nuclear bomb depends upon your urges, which is the prerogative of the mind. It is, therefore, important to service and keep the mind in proper shape.

Take the case of a young couple. They were dying for each other before they got married. However, as they settled down in marriage, they have been locking horns with each other on every count and any count. Before, their marriage, their egos were driving them to make the marriage happen. Therefore, their innate trends had temporarily taken a backseat. Once that mission was complete, their true selves came into full play.

Let us give a look at their astrological indications. The boy’s ego runs high, as Mars placed opposite Jupiter in his chart imply. He remains stuck to his preconceived notions, not open to listening or counsel. Moon conjunct Neptune makes him an escapist and the one who lives in illusionary dream world of his own making. His Aries lagna accounts for his impulsive, aggressive, and haughty nature.  This tendency is there in the girl as well, as her Moon sign remains the same. Born in Gemini lagna, with its lord placed adverse to Mars, she is temperamental, and wishes to live exclusively on her own terms. The result is there for all to see. And, they cannot live in harmony unless they work upon their weakness sincerely, whether this marriage or any future relationship they get into.

Importance of samskaras

A good majority of people usually exhibit symptoms of having split personalities. In some department of life, they may be conducting themselves quite smartly, but in some other they may at their worst. Some may be making the most of their mind-power in their careers, but when it comes to their personal life, their sense of reasons may get stifled - making them conduct unintelligently. The question is, why? Here comes into play one’s individual samskaras with which one is born.

What is samskara? Samskara is a stockpile of impressions that are laid down in the deep layers of mind - both good and bad - as a carryover of the Karmic course undergone during the previous life. They are nothing but reflection of the lessons one had through learning and unlearning, experiences and feelings accrued, and unfulfilled desires of the past life. That sets the premise on which one takes off in this life, in terms of one’s functional traits. And, that accounts for all our attitudes and desire trends, which varies from person to person. For, every individual has had his/her own course of learning & unlearning; experiences and feelings accrued following success or failure in their missions, or whatever confronted with during the previous birth.

Here, it becomes imperative to give a look at the flow chart of human mind. It begins with the inlaid Samskaras. According as the character and content of the Samskaras, individual-specific belief pattern gets involuntarily formed, which defines the inherent nature of a person. That accounts for all our virtues, attributes, attitudes, and desire trends. These excite corresponding thoughts in mind, some of which gravitate into action. Evidently, the character and content of the action correspond to the nature of thoughts. Naturally, some of the samskaras may be quite potent, where as others may be self-defeating. In the stronger areas, one gets due support of their intelligence, which when negotiating the wanting areas gets stifled.

Here is the case of a young man doing extremely well in his career. Let us give a look at the astrological factors supporting his career pursuits. Born in Aries lagna, he is endowed with inherent leadership abilities. 9th lord Jupiter identified with higher mind, is conjunct the Saturn, the 10th lord signifying career, in the 6th house identified with efforts. That grants him with the talent to brilliantly conduct his career pursuits. That also makes him an honest worker. Saturn, well-aligned with Uranus, qualifies him to be thorough in his work, the one who may be able to work out even bare details of the task in hand with precision. The Sun, again well-aligned to Uranus brings in innovative and inventive ideas. Moon, placed in the 9th house owned by wisdom oriented Jupiter, grants him a very fertile mind, with vision, foresight, and imagination. That also makes him highly intuitive. He is bounding with energy granting him the spirit necessary to carry on his task with zeal. And, the fact that he is focused to his career, he is able to keep a check on his occasional  weaknesses. As a result, he is doing well in his career.

But his emotional frame of mind is impaired, as would combust Venus suggest. That gets further amplified with Venus being locked in unholy alliance with Moon and Saturn. So, in matters, where emotions overtakes his mind’s drive, his sense of reasoning gets stifled. His mind then turns negative, coming as it may with the Sun placed opposite Saturn would imply. As a consequence, his personal life is damned.

It is high time that he works upon his emotional frame of mind.  He will then be able to strike a balance both in his career and personal life. His life will then, turn into a beautiful experience.

Solve the mind riddle

Every now and then people approach me to do some magical prayer intended to quick-fix the problems hounding them. Some of them are troubled with career-related challenges. Others are worried because their child’s marriage is getting unduly delayed. Many come apprehensive of some black-magic having been done on them by their adversaries to create hurdles in their lives. As most of them stuck to blind-belief, it becomes very difficult to make them realise that the problem lies in their minds rather than in extraneous factors.

The fact of life is that the living world is a creation of our minds. The way our minds are framed is how we desire, think, visualize, act, perceive, respond and react to the world. If our minds begin on a weak premise, it has to have an undesirable ending. It is, therefore, necessary to first set the mind right, and give it a positive orientation, if one wishes to enjoy a successful life with ease and comfort.

The other day a gentleman in his late sixties confronted with serious domestic turbulence approached me for advice. At this late age, both his wife and children have abandoned him in desperation and are living separately. Both sides seem to be fighting an unrelenting battle with no amicable settlement in sight. A pundit had fed his mind that someone jealous of his growth had played black-magic to disturb his family peace, which in turn would affect his economic prosperity. He wanted a confirmation from me.

I had to take lot of pains to make him understand that the problem actually lied in the attitude of family members rather than any external factor. He could conduct a Havana to eliminate his suspicion. But, the problem will persist unless they work upon their attitudinal problems.

Let us have a brief run into their astrological charts to figure out their attitudinal problems. In the man’s chart, the pointers are: Saturn in the lagna in an unfriendly sign; Mars placed adverse to Uranus and Saturn; Venus locking horns with the Sun; and Moon in unholy alliance with Neptune. This makes him temperamental, ruthless, revengeful, domineering, impatient, and intolerant. He carries the tendency to teach those a lesson, who cross path with him. He is too much emotional and sensitive, whereby he gets stuck to even trivial issues and stretches them beyond their due. He is habitually suspicious, vulnerable to unpredictable mood-swings, and a self-deluding person living in the realm of unrealities.

The wife has her Sun placed adverse to Saturn, which implies having a negative mind-set, being in the habit of always finding fault with the one she does not like. Mars opposed to debilitated Moon makes her an angry woman with short fuse. Saturn placed adverse to Mercury gives her a single track fixated mind. Both Mercury and Venus placed adverse to Rahu, tells upon her emotional balance, and keeps her worrying even on petty issues.

The eldest child has his Mars placed adverse to Saturn reflecting similar traits as discussed in his father’s case. Further to that, Mind indicator Moon in fiery sign Aries, makes him irritable, aggressive, impulsive, and intemperate, who wishes to force his views on all others. Mercury placed adverse to Neptune makes him self-deluding.

In case of the second child, the pointers are: Moon adverse to Saturn; Sun in unholy alliance with Neptune and Uranus, but trine to Moon. The implication is that he has a negative mind-set. He is comfort loving, who wishes to have everything to asking without taking any pains. He is a day dreamer stuck to a realm of unrealities.

The negatives resident in the minds of the family members have been playing the devil for long, and that accounts to their ordeal. How can this problem be resolved, unless they work upon their minds first? Answer lies in regular counselling.

The strength & beauty of Prashna-Jyotish

We owe our existence, sustenance, and dynamism to a system directed by nature-driven energy streams. Therefore, any change in the dynamics of nature-driven energy orchestra shall have corresponding bearing on all aspects of our individual and collective living. That includes all aspects of mind-functions, which drive our thought process, and thereby all actions on our part.

Accordingly, Astrology is designed to do energy mapping of the cosmos at a particular point of time with particular reference to the place where a person is born. The location reference is important, because, the intensity of energies excited by nature shall vary from place to place. A graphical reflection of the energy map drawn is what we call an astrological chart. That points to the basic fabric of one’s making – the strengths, weaknesses and desire trends. It also speaks of the promises one carries for the future. Further reading through the progression of the energy pointers – the specific placement of planets in the astrological chart - it is figured out as to how the journey of life will evolve through the run of time. It can also be figured out as to how easy or difficult shall be the life’s journey. This is the basis of astrological prediction.

Normally, in case of individuals, the astrological chart at the time of one’s birth for the particular location is drawn to look at one’s future trends in emerging times. But there are people who are not aware of their date and time of birth. Does it mean they will remain deprived of astrological guidance? Astrology answers queries of such people through a system called Prashna-Jyotish (Horary Astrology) with a fair amount of precision.

In Krishnamurthy system of prasna-Jyotish that this writer follows, numbers starting from 1 and ending up with 249 are respectively assigned specific location in an astrological chart, which is taken as the lagna. Accordingly, the questioner is asked to quote a number between 1 and 249 that flashes in his/her mind at the time of raising the query. With reference to the lagna corresponding to the number quoted, the astrological chart is drawn for the moment of query.

A look at the successful prediction through Prashna-Jyotish about the making of three successive Chief Ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, during the last 8 years, will reveal how potent the system is.

In Prashna-Jyotish, first the genuineness of the question is verified before proceeding further. Otherwise, the question is dropped. In the horary chart drawn in respect of the new incumbent, the number randomly selected was 194 and working done at 14:35 hrs on 30th September 2011.

The lagna sign corresponding to the number 194 is Capricorn, the ruling sign of the natural zodiac. The lagna sub-lord Venus happens to be the 10th lord identified with aspiration to occupy high office. Therefore, the query was genuine. The luminary Moon, firmly placed in the 10th house indicated that the person was due for high office. Mercury, the 11th sub-lord, identified with fulfilment of desires, was exalted and occupied the constellation owned by fertile Moon. Both being in forward motion indicated that he was promised of fulfilment of his desires. Benevolent Jupiter’s aspect over the 10th house and Moon, read together with Saturn that is conjunct the 10th lord Venus, further added strength to his aspirations. But, by when shall it fructify?

Lagna sign being a movable sign, the result had to come fast, close to a month's time. To figure out the time of fruition, Moon has to progress to a point corresponding to the ruling planet at the time of working. The constellation lord of Moon and Lagna respectively happened to be Jupiter and Sun. It was on the 1st of November, when Moon was transiting Sagittarius sign owned by Jupiter in the constellation owned by the Sun that the new incumbent took oath of office as the Chief Minister.

Purify your mind and spirit

In the olden Gurukul system of education, even the advanced learners had to first subject themselves to intense meditation stretched on for at least a year before the learning process began. It was all done purposefully. It helped free their minds of all preconditioning and various negative memory inputs already prevailing there from before. Following that, the canvas of mind expands and gets ready to explore a subject with an open mind. For, otherwise, a conditioned mind usually takes a prismatic view of a subject and the learner may not be able to have a holistic understanding of it. Second, a sense of dispassion develops that enables a learner to transgress his individualistic prejudices and obsessions and prejudices and use the knowledge rightfully.

Our Rishis knew that any empowerment tool - virtues, attributes and knowledge - is something like a double-edged weapon. If rightfully used, it may prove meaningful. On the contrary, knowingly or unknowingly, if one picks up a wrong lead, it may prove disastrous. A conditioned and corrupted mind is always vulnerable to such misdemeanours.

The Rishis also knew that ‘power’, if not steered by a well ordained mind, could also corrupt one’s mind. It can bring in the swaggering ego by which one may begin to believe being all-knowing. Such characters often develop intellectual arrogance of wide dimension. They begin to believe being qualified enough to act as self-anointed arbiter of other’s destiny. And, that proves disastrous.

The paradox is that the intelligent ones could misuse their power with equal deft as he could use it constructively. Therefore, the Rishis felt it necessary to let the disciples work upon their minds before they were exposed to knowledge. For, then, they will be able to understand the subject in right perspective and shall apply them correctly.

See, how a person of great calibre, empowered to do great things in life, has been virtually acting as a self-spoiler because of his conditioned mind. Let us begin with his positives. Intelligence and communications signifying Mercury is conjunct wisdom oriented Jupiter. The two are beautifully placed trine to Moon and Uranus. That empowers him with a fertile mind having vision, foresight and imagination. He is armed with inventive and innovative abilities and is capable of articulating his thoughts and actions to his best advantage. Mercury favourably placed to Venus, brings in the art of public relations.

However, his mind is so negatively conditioned that it invariably stifles his virtues and positives as and when he is overcharged with anger. And, in a fit of rage, he loses his sense of direction. By the time he realises, the damage is done. Mind indicator, Moon, is placed in an emotive sign Cancer, and is posited adverse to mischievous Neptune and fiery Mars. That accounts for his unpredictable mood swings and uncontrolled anger. That also makes him subject to self-delusion, mistaken beliefs and perceptions. Mars forms unholy alliance with Uranus and Saturn. That makes him impatient, suspicious, bad tempered, temperamental, irrational, reckless, tactless, and revengeful.

There is another angle to the state of his mind and psyche which deserves attention. Uranus in the 9th house placed adverse to Karmakarak Saturn points to a heavy baggage he carries from the previous birth. Mars, the lagna-lord implying the self, is placed adverse to Moon, the 9th lord meaning father, and Saturn the 4th lord identified with mother. That points to an unpleasant childhood. The impressions there of have further made a strong dent in his psyche, which often overtakes his mind’s drive, particularly when in anger, which is quite frequent. Consequently, more often than not, he gets into self-undoing act for his self and the family.

I wish, he gets into mind-detoxification process without further loss of time. Following that, the best in him may get another opportunity to revive itself.

Astrology and politics

Arunachal Pradesh has been going through a bad phase this year, as if nature would have cast its evil eye on it. It all began with the tragic death of the then Chief Minister Dorji Khandu, forcing election of a new leader. The new incumbent could not even settle down as majority of legislators were up in arms against him. Those protesting got incensed because the central leadership got carried away by the emotional trickery played by a minority group. In process, the ground reality got ignored.

The political melodrama that followed literally left the state rudderless for months as the fight getting intensified in July. As a fall out of the leadership crisis, the state also witnessed ethnic armed clashes, which took away innocent lives. The question that naturally arises: why so in Arunachal alone? Could these turn of events been anyway foreseen to facilitate some pre-emptive measure? It being a bordering state, the question warrants immediate attention. For, China having its hawk eye hovering around, Arunachal Pradesh can ill-afford such long drawn political instability.

Indian Astrology, designed to see through the implication of ‘time’ - the administering tool of the Divine - has answer to all such questions. For, all units of time in the Indian calendar system followed by Indian Astrology, both in macro and micro scales, are framed in correspondence with periodic motion of planets – the markers of various energy streams flowing through the cosmos. Seen in relation to the fast spinning earth, the energy flux excited by nature every moment would naturally vary widely. Time, therefore, is a measure of varying energy patterns, with its related ramification in terms of individual and collective happenings. For, all that exists in this world, including human mind, is nothing but manifestation of nature driven energy. Therefore, our thought process cannot escape the influence of any variation in nature- driven energy patterns.

Remember, in natures scheme of things, continuum exists in the flow chart of time. Therefore, every moment of time, being a stepping stone for the next one, contains the information regarding the manner in which the energy flow is likely to evolve in the coming moment. That is the basis of astrological predictions.

The pointers to mundane events are astrological charts drawn for various locations at full-moon/new-moon time during eclipses that are visible. For, they reflect the turn in the dynamics of time. Two eclipses were visible in India this year so far - solar on 4th January, and lunar on 15/16th June. Their implication deserves attention.

In the solar eclipse chart drawn on Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Lagna-lord Venus is placed in the constellation owned by Jupiter tenanted in the 10th house. Venus locked in adverse formation to mischievous Neptune, and Jupiter ill-disposed to malefic Rahu, when read in togetherness, point to major political uncertainty following unforeseen and unseemly happening. The 10th lord Saturn signifying the ruling cliché is tenanted in the 5th house, thus being placed 8th from its own sign, points to possible change of guard. Saturn is again ill-disposed to its dire enemy Mars tenanted in the 8th house. It will not be out of place to mention here that 8th house/8th placement is identified with serious difficulties/death. Besides, the Sun, the natural significator of the man in power, is also placed adverse to mischievous Neptune. These factors point to change of guard under most unusual circumstances. And so it happened.

In the lunar eclipse chart for 15/16th June, the lagna lord Mars, is placed adverse to the 10th lord Saturn, as well as mischievous Neptune. The Sun again is locked in adverse formation with Uranus. This once again points to leadership change.

The point I wish to make is that had the central leadership been alert and due care been taken before effecting a leadership change, possibly this long-drawn political instability in a bordering state could have been averted.

Be alive to your thoughts

During his exile days, Lord Sri Rama and Sita were asleep in their hut in the jungle. Outside, Lakshmana was on guard. Describing what possibly Laksmana’s mind would be doing the round during the eerie silence of the wild at the dead of night, Maithilisharan Gupta writes in Panchavati:

koi pasa na rahane para bhi,

jana-mana mauna nahi rahata,

apa-apa ki sunata hai waha,

apa-apa ki hai kahata

Even when alone, human mind is never at rest. It keeps talking and listening to itself, is what the above stanza implies. In a way, it remains engaged in never ending streams of thoughts, it keeps breeding incessantly. And, the character and content of the thoughts excited correspond to our memory implants that condition our mind.

Here, it will not be odd to mention that in the course of our day-to-day lives, we are to be accosted with all sorts of experiences - good and bad. The related feelings thereof find place in our memory bank. Some of these impressions may be inconsequential, even having negative connotation. These impressions are not just stored in our minds; rather, they remain in active mode influencing our mind and psyche, with related bearing on our future karma. And, they continue doing their rounds till they either reach their logical conclusion, or be resolved through conscious efforts. It therefore, becomes incumbent upon us to keep a watch on the thoughts flowing in our minds.

The wise keep clearing off the clutters of their minds on a day-to-day basis. That enables them to steer their lives mindfully in positive direction to their full advantage. The weak and the average, on the contrary, get trapped in the web of their own assumed thoughts and memories. They keep mulling over those impressions and eventually, these impressions overtake the drive of their minds, naturally, to their detriment. In the process, they drain out a significant quantum of their energy, and literally jam their mind space. They, then, are hardly left with the energy necessary to attend to their priority preferences. Also, there isn't left enough of mind-space to process fresh thoughts objectively. Such characters eventually invite stress and depression. And, if that goes unattended, they develop psychiatric problems over a period of time, calling for therapy.

The functioning or the flow of our mind can be figured out well in advance with a fair amount of precision and timely remedial measures taken accordingly. Here is the case study of a person, who carries lot of unpleasant memories from his early childhood and who now has entered into his fifties. Yet these memories, unconsciously though, have been chasing him constantly. Whenever he is low - physically, mentally, or emotionally - he gets into a negative overdrive, and loses his steam.

Let us now look at his astrological chart. The Sun, the prime driver, is in debilitation. That tells upon his low levels of confidence and the will and resolve necessary to withstand even the usual ordeals of life. The Sun is again conjunct mischievous Neptune, besides being placed adverse to mind signifier, the Moon and emotionally-ordained Venus. That makes him emotionally too much touchy and sensitive. As a consequence, he gets too much exercised over even trivial issues, which he stretches too far. He also becomes vulnerable to self-delusion and day dreaming. Saturn aspects restive Rahu implying that when confronted with unsavoury situation, even minor in nature, he may begin hallucinating. And, he is not left with the where-withal necessary to attend to even his usual routine. The adverse placement of Saturn with intellectually ordained Uranus makes him vulnerable to restlessness, intermittent bouts of illogical reasoning, and frustration.

The good thing about him is that when the cause underlying his malady was explained, he has volunteered himself to mind-detoxification exercise. Not even a week has gone bye, and he has shown good signs of recovery. I am sure; he will regain his normal self and esteem.

Astrology is a game-changer

The general perception about Astrology is that it is a destiny-defining predictive discipline. This belief is based on the premise that the journey of everybody’s life is pre-programmed with no scope for any major change. We are likely to face good or bad times in life depending on the karmas of our previous lives. If we take this concept to be true, it confronts us with a series of questions: What then, is the role of ‘power of freewill’ that human beings are supposedly endowed with? If every thing about life is predetermined, what useful purpose does the discipline of astrology serve? In this phenomenal world where everything is transitory, how comes destiny is beyond change?

In order to understand how valid or fallacious the above concept is, it will be desirable to look into some real life stories of those who could redefine their future through conscious efforts. In one such case, a very well woman fully committed to her marriage, was subject to continued physical, mental, and emotional trauma by her scheming in-laws. The reason: the in-laws never took kindly to their son marrying her against their wishes. The problem got further confounded as her naïve husband, often fell prey to the emotional tantrums of his parents, and would side with them. The victim had almost reached a point of break, and apparently, marital separation looked inevitable.

A look at her chart revealed that the Uranus, identified with elders, was posited opposite the lagna lord Jupiter, implying possibility of conflict between the two. Uranus further placed adverse to Saturn meant that the elders were ill-intentioned. Husband indicator, the 7th lord Mercury, well-aligned with Jupiter, pointed his love for wife. But, Mercury was also placed adverse to both Mars and headless Ketu. It implied that he was a restless guy who may react impulsively without applying proper forethought. Confronted with such a hostile atmosphere, she had to face marital turbulence. And, many astrologers looking at her chart on its face value had predicted a sure marital separation.

Worried, that is when she sought my advice and confronted me with volleys of questions. "Does my husband really love me? Will he ever realise the truth underlying their marital discord? Are we fated to separate?"

The woman was first assured that if she conducted intelligently, she will be able to turn the tide to her advantage once and for ever. She was advised to temporarily move out of house so that the focus shifted away from her. Her husband would then get time and space to figure out his parents in their true colours. She was also advised not to take a confrontationist attitude and deal with her husband with a touch of love, whenever he tried to interact with her. Barely 6 months had gone bye that the lady’s husband realised the truth. Gradually, they came closer, and today they are living happily together. The in-laws, too, having realised that their son could not longer be manipulated, they have stopped playing spoiler any more.

The message that emerges loud and clear is that the marriages do not fail or succeed simply because they are so scripted in their charts. It is the attitude of the players involved, and how intelligently or foolishly one would deal with the problems coming one’s way is what counts the most. And, if turbulence is indicated in the chart, the attitudinal issues also find reflection. The one, who has learnt through conscious efforts to conduct intelligently with prudence and patience, is able to deal with the issues in hand well and change the course of destiny.

So, it happened with the lady. Initially, she did have to go through the travails of destiny indications. But, having learnt to intelligently apply her ‘power of freewill’ she could rewrite her destiny.

Astrology, therefore, when rightfully used, can prove to be a game-changer.

Slow & steady wins the race

Rome was not built in a day. It must have gone through lows and highs before it came in full form. Similarly, any growth process has its own chemistry and time-scale. The one who is able to deal with and withstand the oddities and hazards coming his way with patience and perseverance is able to finally strike the desired destination.

It is to drill the above hard truth deep in our minds that we worship 9 varied progressively evolving forms of Mother Goddess Durga – from Shailaputri, the first child form into a Siddhidatri, the fully evolved mother - during the Navaratra, which recently concluded. The message, loud and clear, is that even a well-planned initiative has to go through a process involving a certain time-frame to bear fruits. Do we remember this philosophic import while offering our prayers to the  Goddess (whom we all regard as Maa or Mother), or end up just in tokenism? I wish that we remember the above precept, and then we shall not only be able to steer through the rigours of life better, but also secure sustained growth with ease and comfort.

The fact of life is that in today’s aspirational world, everyone wishes to live on one’s own terms in a demanding mode, many a times even mindlessly. We wish to target the best that strikes our minds, and that too quick. But, we lack the patience necessary to bear with the associated challenges. What we forget is that in the world we live in, every individual is different, all having varying perceptions and desire trends. In such an environment, we are bound to be confronted with conflict of interests. The world, therefore, will never move to our whims and fancies.

Naturally, we will have to be at our best to strike success in this competing environment. Remember, it is beyond our scope to change the environment and tailor it to suit our terms. But, it is very much within our hands to make amends in ourselves so that we are well geared up to deal with the challenges coming our way with prudence and patience. However, it is rare to find a person who is conscious about identifying and working upon his/her frailties that clouds his/her sense of reasoning and thereby his/her productive potential. The one who does that emerges the winner.

Here is the case of a very potential guy who is into a profession that could grow slow but steady with time. It does not allow scope for speculative growth. But, his conditioned mind did not allow him to acknowledge this ground reality. He had no patience and was desperately looking for a change, even if it amounted to a change of discipline. So, he failed to put in his best in what was already in hand, which allowed him a respectable comfort level. Eventually, he lost his job for lack of focus.

What made him conduct so unintelligently? Born with Gemini lagna brings in the tendency to live on one’s own terms in a demanding mode. He could not bear with any advice that would be at variance with his whims and fancies. The karmakaraka Saturn placed adverse to the Sun accounts for his fixated mindset, which does not allow him appreciate ground realities. Saturn crossing path with Mars makes him impatient, restive, and rebellious. Mischievous Neptune placed adverse to Saturn makes him self-deluding, and that with Jupiter makes him subject to peculiar beliefs. On top of that both Mars and Saturn are placed opposite Jupiter, pointing to his swaggering ego, which does not allow him being open to counsel and making necessary amends.

It is still not late for him to work upon his frailties so that he could bring into full play his sense of intelligence to his advantage, at least here onwards. For, he has still a long way to go.

Regulate your thought process

Man is driven by desires, which, in turn, excite corresponding thoughts. Some of these thoughts gravitate into action. Others lacking in force, either keep revolving at level of dream or get lost in the way. In the same manner, many people, lacking clarity in vision and thought, often end up directionless. Such people may be breeding innumerable thoughts, many of them quite meaningful, but for lack of conviction, they get stuck at the dream level. In the process, such people get stifled and end up disgusted. They, then, loose the sense of reasons and purpose in life.

Remember, human mind-space works like computer’s memory mechanism. If we ever open programmes beyond the scope of random memory of the computer, it hangs. We then need to shut down the computer and open the programmes most needed afresh. In case of human beings also, many a times, too much of inconsequential thoughts get piled up. These thoughts occupy so much of mind-space that we are hardly left with enough to process our thoughts objectively. The habitual day-dreamers - as also those who suffer from worrying syndrome - often get so trapped. Once caught up in such a situation and get desperate for a change. However, the paradox with people caught up in such a bind is that they remain clueless about their desired destination. And, if their malady goes unattended for long, they may end up a psychic case, warranting medical intervention.

In one such case, an ambitious young man with great potential is not able to find a way out of his stagnation. He detests his present job, and therefore, he is not able to put in his best. Remember, unless you love and enjoy what you are doing, you will fail to raise the spirit necessary to discharge your obligations well. As a consequence, when you stagnate, you end up restless.

Look at his astrological chart. Mind indicator, the Moon, is conjunct mischievous Neptune, which makes him a day dreamer, also having a suspicious mind. He will not only be suspicious about others, but also doubt himself. And, the fact that Moon is placed in the sign Sagittarius, the one owned by expansive Jupiter, the flow of thoughts would be endless. What further adds salt to the injury is Mercury’s adverse placement with restive Rahu occupying his lagna sign. That keeps his thoughts randomly drifting from one end to the other, not necessarily consistent with each other.

Karmakaraka Saturn is exalted, but is placed adverse to headless Ketu. That makes him a habitual escapist who may have the tendency to run away from the truth. It also breeds in a strong sense of inertia, which does not allow take challenges in time. The Sun is locked in adverse formation with the Rahu-Ketu axis, which makes his conviction and resolve questionable. His energies may, thus, go misdirected. And then Mars, the planet identified with fire energy is debilitated. That makes him irritable and impulsive also.

For the above reasons, he has stored up such a huge stock of inconsequential and conflicting thoughts that his mind is literally in a state of hang. He, therefore, needs to urgently get into a spiritual process under the guidance of a proper mentor so that he could clear off the clutters of mind before it is too late. Otherwise, it will turn into psychiatric problem of a serious dimension calling for medical intervention. Under present circumstances, he does not have the space necessary to register any counsel. It is only after cleansing of his mind that positive suggestions offered during counselling could lead him towards the right course due.

Time to reinvent oneself

Nature holds the key to all aspects of existential order – creation, nourishment & sustenance, and disintegration with the intent of recycling. In fact, every living creature in existence or, for that matter even other gross matters existent in this phenomenal world, in all their aspects, are nothing but manifestation of nature driven energies. They have all come into being through a course of progressive evolution, in course of play and inter-play of nature-driven energy streams. Therefore, there remains connect and continuum between the cosmos and the living world.

Evidently, any change in the dynamics of nature-driven energy streams has to have related bearing on the whole life cycle, and hence, the need to live in consonance with nature. Here, it needs to be noted that nature’s energy orchestra, seen with respect to a particular part of the globe, goes through varying phases in course of its annular motion. And it plays into extremes; at some moment in its most heated phase, it scorches us, and at other times it makes us face the brunt of chill. The whole changing course corresponds to the annular motion of the Sun, the prime mover of nature’s energy orchestra. Traversing its cyclic elliptical trajectory, shuttling between the northern & southern hemisphere, and hovering between Eastern and Western horizons, the Sun’s movement drives through periodic weather changes.

The question therefore, is: How to face the ebullient phase of the Sun when it would be at its zenith, and then combat its cold phase when it moves on to its farthest end from a particular place? And, mind it, the impact affects in all aspects of our lives –physical, mental, emotional, and creative. Remember, on a Full Moon day, the energies excited by the Sun and Moon create such a pull that the sea becomes turbulent with its high tides. Incidentally, human body comprises of 65% of moisture content with the same water-salt mix as in the sea water. Therefore, it is difficult to believe that human body will go unaffected. Of course, the influence gets more pronounced in case of weaklings such as lunatics or those subject to severe mood swings and depression. Similarly, the two extreme phases of the Sun has to have corresponding bearing on us, which includes our mental construct and its working.

Ancient India's learned masters took note of the truth that life on earth resonates in correspondence with the cosmic cycle.  And, in pursuant of this, they planned periodic religious festivities coinciding with major atmospheric changes, when people pray and meditate, so as to get geared up to take on the emerging challenges in strength with ease and comfort.

The Sun, taken with reference to India, reaches its bottommost low in the Hindu month of Karthika, when, traversing the Southern hemisphere, it moves to the farthest end of the Western horizon. For, India is placed in the Northern hemisphere and towards the Eastern horizon. Before we enter that phase, the first 9 days in the bright half of the preceding Ashvin (sharada) month, popularly known as Shardeya Navaratra, are dedicated to worship of Shakti – the kinetic energy driving the worldly order. For this year, the Navaratra festive season is already on.

During this festive period, a believer, worships with primary focus on Mother Goddess Durga, the deity personified with Shakti. During the 9 days of prayer regime, two other variants of Shakti – Mother Goddess Lakshmi, identified with wealth and prosperity, and Sarswati, the deity identified with wisdom – are also worshipped. We thus work upon all three important aspects of Shakti, vital to our existential needs at regular periodic interval. In the process, we rekindle our energies, re-define our creative urges, and expand our level or wisdom, so that we could steer through our lives intelligently and in all strength.

Free your mind to succeed

Future is always full of surprises and uncertainties. For, the dynamics of every emerging moment being totally at variance with the past, their callings too has to be different. Many a times, it showers us with fresh opportunities, opening doors for further growth and thereby fulfilling time ahead. At other moments, it confronts us with unforeseen challenges often baffling us.

Here, it needs to be understood that the world does not necessarily moves to one’s asking. We may speculate and cultivate aspirations for the future, and accordingly programme our lives one way or the other. But you can never be sure about how the environmental conditions would shape up and confront you in future. That may either prove conducive or detrimental to your expectations.

Whatever way future presents itself - good or bad – has to be attended aptly; we have no escape even from the negatives. In order to deal with either of the situations, we need to be on full mental alert. If something good is in sight, and we do not remain vigilant enough to mark it in time, we will fail to promptly act upon and translate them into fruits to one’s advantage. And, we will miss opportunities coming our way. For, even the good does not shower its bounties by default.

In contrast, if we are confronted with unsavoury situations, once again we need to be on full mental alert. Otherwise, we will fail to promptly judge the gravity of the situation in the right perspective due and take timely remedial actions. And, the problems will stretch on burdening us with heavy load of long drawn discomfort.

It, therefore, becomes incumbent upon us to have our minds, which drive all actions on our part, always in shape. Remember, mind works to its optimum best, both in its creative and combative aspect, when it remains in a state to act effortlessly and spontaneously. For that ours minds need to be free from any preconditioning whatsoever. Otherwise, guided by the desires and perceptions from the past and assumptions thereof, which may not prove true to the expectations of the emerging issues, we may get misled pursuing our objectives, causing irreparable damage to our true mission in life.

A case in point is that of a qualitative gentleman who though has come up in life a hard way, but has achieved all that he aspired for. However, the problem with him is that he remembers his hardships more than his achievements.  This often puts him in a self-pitying mode, nursing unknown fear. At times, he even hallucinates. He gets so put off by circumstances that he keeps worrying, losing his mental and emotional comfort. The danger is that if he does not work upon and get over this predicament of mind well in time, he may lose opportunities likely to unfold in near future.

Saturn, inherently the planet of limitation for both the Sun and Mars, and also ill-disposed towards them in his chart, account for the difficulties often confronting him. However, the fact that benevolent Jupiter offers its beneficial aspect to the Sun, it makes him transgress the limitations exercised by Saturn. Here again, Jupiter exchanges house with Mars, the 10th lord, identified with career prospects. Whenever the exchange becomes operative, Jupiter will be deemed to be operative from the 6th house identified with success in his efforts and also over his adversaries and competitors. Thereafter, Jupiter lends support to the karmic planet Saturn already placed in the 10th house to together boost his career prospects. That accounts for his sustained career growth despite all odds.

As of now, Jupiter in transit lends support to the 10th house. Mid-November onwards even Saturn will join hands to together augment his career prospects further. I wish, he is mentally geared up beforehand to take up the call promptly.

In pursuit of true happiness

There is more to a person than what meets one’s eyes. The way an individual conducts in life or, for that matter, reacts and responds to a situation, need not be simply based on what prompts the person in apparent terms. The issue in hand just serves as a trigger that brings out into open how one’s inner-frame of mind is structured. What comes out is the reflection of a stockpile of impressions laid down in the inner-frame of mind, all gathered in the past. They all relate to the experiences, good or bad, one would have encountered in the past. The way one would have perceived those happenings, help carve out the character and content of the impressions, which define the way one’s mind would react or respond, when subjected to a trigger.

It so happens that when confronted with an irksome situation, one begins to feel low, mentally, emotionally or otherwise. During such moments, the conscious mind becomes dormant, making way for the sub-conscious to take over mind’s drive. Thereafter, the negative impressions, already present in mind, begin to show their true colour. That, in turn, blurs one’s vision, and the thought process becomes temporarily incoherent, making the person to go crazy over even trivial issues. A person, for instance, over reacts even on a non-issue. But, it is not the issue immediately in hand that prompted the person to react unintelligently. The seeds of hurt feeling or anger would have been already there which, given a trigger, influenced the thought process, leading to unreasoned response.

It, therefore, becomes incumbent upon us to keep a watch on our minds so that the negatives, if any, are resolved on a day to day basis. Otherwise, one would lose ease and comfort, with due ramification even on the immediate environment. It is however, easier said than done. It is here that Astrology can extend due support. It helps identify both strength-giving and self-undoing impressions in our minds. Having known one’s unbecoming imprints, one could resolve them well in time so as to evade any possibility of unreasoned response. Also, the ground gets laid down for the potential side to unfold to its optimum best unhindered.

A case in point is that of a young married lady. In the earlier part of her married life, the in-laws side made all out attempt to exercise their absolute control on her life, not allowing her any space. Even the husband sandwiched between his parents and the wife remained a mute spectator. In the process she was mentally and emotionally traumatised off and on. It was therefore, natural for her to carry hurt feeling against them. And, the fact that she was not getting due support of her husband, she lost trust on him as well. In course of time, a situation arose when she had to walk out of her in-laws house in a state of desperation. Later, having realised their unreasonable behaviour, because of social pressure or self-reflection, it is difficult to say, but, the husband and his parents have been truly trying to reconcile. However, there is so much hurt feeling in her mind that even a positive gesture by them is perceived by her as a ploy.

Let us look at the issue in astrological perspective. The Sun, eclipsed between the planet of limitation Saturn and headless Ketu in the 7th house identified with marriage, implies that she was vulnerable to harassment in husband’s family, and that accounts for her hurt feeling. As a result, she has been responding insensibly and at times aggressively. For, mind indicator Moon, is placed adverse to headless Ketu, and Sun locks horns with fiery Mars.

I wish, she comes out of her past, and I am sure, her life will be in all pleasure once again.

Damage done by living Gods

India is a land of many Gods. The believers worship them earnestly seeking grant of boons for fulfilment of desires and mitigation of evil. Whether Gods in the forms we perceive are in existence somewhere beyond our vision, receptive and responsive to our calls, I don’t wish to speculate. The act of worship, however, would not cause any harm. It, however, goes beyond doubt that there exists a self-automated divine arrangement, up above in the cosmos, with Planets and Stars, playing from the front, which holds the key to our life mechanism. All of them, circuiting their individual specific trajectory are set to a predefined design, with no scope to transgress their limits. Therefore, they remain in perfect harmony and balance.  No wonder, the system has been running since time immeasurable. They have been simultaneously carrying on their individual and collective assignments in a giving mode. Imagine a situation, if ever, their balance gets disturbed, it will be just catastrophic, though it won't happen, for none of them could ever go out of their bounds.

In contrast, the living Gods – those who self-assume being all-knowing and perfect by themselves – know no bounds. For, they have minds, armed with power of freewill, whereby they could go about the way they wish. Most of them move in a demanding mode, expecting from those around to blindly follow their wishes and commands. Anybody not proving true to their expectations, they just go crazy. In their judgmental spree, they find it within their right to belittle and punish others. They, themselves, don’t care to count their own ignorance – limitation of their perceptive and comprehensive abilities, coming as they may with their minds conditioned one way or the other. Such are the people who in their religious or political frenzy go about taking innocent lives. On individual scale also, we have such characters, enough in evidence. They, in their self-assumed more than godlike avatar, often ruin their families, but would not come to reasons.

A case in sight is that of a man stuck to his self-delusion. He has self-defined a value system of his own. He wants his family members to follow them in a copycat style. He does not allow them any space, nor does he care for their feelings. Any slippage on their part, even if done unknowingly, he loses all control and begins behaving mindlessly. Everybody in the family is living under continued fear. In course of time, it has adversely affected the mind and psyche of his children so much, that their thought process has gone haywire. After all, what has he gained in the process?

A look into his astrological chart will reveal the above trends. The lagna-lord Mars placed in the 12th house means he is prone to getting into self-undoing acts. Mars placed adverse to Uranus, Saturn, and Moon makes him domineering, temperamental, bad tempered, tactless, irrational, revengeful and brutal. Moon’s ill-disposition to mischievous Neptune accounts for his self-delusion, incoherent thought process, habitually suspicious of all others, and makes him live in a realm of unreality. Venus posited adverse to the Sun accounts for his impaired emotional framework, whereby he will stretch even trivial issues beyond their due, and will remain stuck to them long.

This is not to suggest that his chart does not carry positives. Moon is conjunct the Uranus, both trine to Jupiter and Mercury grant him a very fertile mind, with vision, foresight, imagination, and innovative spirit. However, the negatives have been playing so heavy on him that he hardly allows any scope to his positives come into full play.

I wonder, whether he will ever realise even after causing immense damage to his family. I wish that he realises sooner than later and opens up to listening. Otherwise, things will go beyond redemption.

Making right choices in life

Everybody seems to be keen on passionately exercising one’s right to freedom. The question, however, is: In this complex world, with all its enormity and diversity, does the sense of liberty inherent in all of us, allow the scope for unrestrained pursuance of one’s whims and fancies? If that be so, no body shall be at peace by oneself or the environment. And, there will be chaos all around, given the fact that most of us wish to play around in a demanding mode. Even more so, because, every individual is inherently made out different from one another, all exhibiting varying attitudes and desire trends. Conflict of interest, therefore, becomes a natural consequence.

Here, it may not be out of place to mention that element of freedom carries as much probability of being misused as would be its productive potential. For, human mind is driven by the concept of relative perception, whereby two different minds could take diametrically opposite views over the same issue.  The danger, therefore, is that unmindfully, you make one wrong choice, set your foot in an undesirable premise, and you get trapped in cage of your own making, thus losing your power of freedom. Once you get so entrapped, though you may see the beauty of the free-world around through the sieve, and aspire it also, but, your fragile mind will not easily let you set your steps firmly towards freedom.

The paradox is that human being is well armed with inbuilt power of discrimination, applying which one could pick up the right lead. For, Buddhi - the faculty of discriminate intelligence – remains a necessary constituent of human mind. That brings in the power to dispassionately analyse and visualise things in the right and long-term perspective, and accordingly make the most appropriate choice.

Fact of life, however, is that more often than not ordinary mortals get carried away by the glare and glitters of the apparent world, and accept them to be true on their face value. And, they don’t feel the necessity of invoking Buddhi for due diligence. Consequently, the underlying truth, if any, gets ignored, and that is naturally to one’s detriment.

A case in point is that of a young girl badly craving for love. The first tenderly touch of a smart guy, and she was overtaken. She mistook it to be an act of providence, assuming that probably they were soul-mates from the previous birth, not knowing what “Soul” really means. In her emotional frenzy, she just did not care that the guy was married and has a child. Naturally, they had to perforce carry on this relationship in hiding. She carried the hope that if providence brought them together, sooner or later, grounds will be automatically made out facilitating the relationship to see light of the day. But, nothing of the kind seems to be in sight even after waiting for so many years. Having lost all patience by now, she seems to be losing her mental balance, calling for psychological aid.

This is just one out of many such cases in evidence. The question here is: what makes one get into such self-undoing acts? It is nothing but one’s own individual specific inherent tendencies. Let us look for answer in the girl’s chart. The Sun placed opposite Uranus implies that she would be unconventional to the extent that she may not hesitate defying all laid down societal norms. She may act headless, erratic, and tactless. This when read together with love-indicating Venus conjunct the Mars and Mercury, all placed adverse to Saturn, Rahu and Moon, accounts for her aberration.

I wish, she realises what she has been unto so far, without further loss of time and make necessary corrections in her attitude. It is still not late for her to start life afresh.

Know the self and get the best

I witnessed an interesting dialogue between an inquisitive kid, watching the President’s address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day on television, and his aunt. The child asked, “What does a President do?” To this, the aunt replied: “As the head of the state, she controls the nation.”

Continuing with his volley of questions, the child asked: “But how does she reach me?”

“The President commands you through the elders in the family,” casually suggested the aunt. “Oh! Do you mean that everybody in the family can command me,” asked the child, “just because I am six-year-old?”

This shows, how important is the sense of independence even for a kid. It is, therefore, natural for the youth to be more assertive about his right to freedom, many a times even to the discomfiture of the elders. No wonder, a youth in his early 20s recently resisted the suggestion of seeking guidance from an astrologer, a rank outsider, to resolve his conflict.

The young man was in a dilemma. Impressed by the popular trend among his contemporaries, he fancied taking up management course. His father, too, a management person himself, wished the same. But, somehow, he could not make it to a business school of his choice. So, a sense of disgust overtook him. His mother, wary of his state of mind, was keen to get him engaged in a creative pursuit that was accessible. So, she suggested him to get into journalism. The young man, however, was reluctant to follow her advice.

Time was passing by and the level of his frustration was growing by the day. Not finding a way, he reluctantly agreed to seek my advice. I noticed that Mercury had the strongest influence in his astrological chart, and accordingly, he should opt for a vocation suited to its trends. The fact that Mars was conjunct restive Rahu and also situated adverse to Uranus, it would not allow him the level of concentration needed to pursue any scientific stream. So, he needed to look at other prerogatives of Mercury. Mercury’s passions are frequent change, movement, critical analysis and communication. Incidentally, Mercury is well-aligned with mind signifier, the Moon, and wisdom-oriented Jupiter. That points to the man having a fertile mind, clarity in vision and thought, flair for writing, and the one armed with excellent communicative skill. Accordingly, journalism appeared to be his natural choice.

However, since Mars and Jupiter were together, both unfavourably aligned to the Sun, his swaggering ego did not allow him to take any advice kindly that were contrary to his preconditioned mind. I suggested that since he were idling those days, he should work upon his language skills which, in any way, would be needed whatever field he opted for. That got registered in his mind and with that end in view, he joined a media firm as an intern. Today, he is a successful journalist.

Remember, the inlaid potential will not unfold out of its own. You need to first identify and acknowledge it, and then prepare the ground conducive to its fruition. However, caught up in the glare and glitters of the outer world, seldom does a person feel the urge to self-reflect and know what lies deep down the inner frame of mind. Here astrology can come to your aid by dispassionately providing the right lead with a fair amount of precision.

Why India is protesting today

Whenever curd is churned, first comes out the scum, which when skimmed, makes way for fresh cream to come up. So it happens in course of societal churning as well to facilitate periodic corrections, but for which society will not evolve.

Seen in present Indian context, the scum in the form of various scams began to unfold during the later part of 2010 that shocked the nation. It coincided with Uranus igniting the fire power of Mars in India’s independence chart, through its square aspect. Uranus is a planet carrying the potential to bring in radical change either through people's agitations or judicial intervention, incidentally both in evidence.

As had already been indicated in the last year’s closing issue of this column, the churning had to become still more intense during the current year. Uranus had, meanwhile become retrograde which, after regaining its forward motion struck Mars once again with similar force during March-April 2011. To that coincided, the Anna Hazare’s fast, which brought out another face of the scum in the open – the hollowness of unworthy mediocrity holding top positions.

Governments directionless approach to the whole issue was very much indicated in the New Year’s chart for 2011. For, the 10th sub-lord, Saturn, identified with the power that be, is placed in the lagna occupying the constellation owned by Moon, which was placed adverse to mischievous Neptune. That accounts for lack of clarity in vision and thought, misplaced judgment, inconsistency in approach, impatience, imprudence, immaturity, and uncalled for loud-mouthing by the ruling clique. And, so they floundered all through the course of Anna and Ramdeva agitation to become a laughing stock. In fact, their indiscretion, unmindfully though, further added fuel to the people’s fire.

In Mundane astrology, Moon signifies the common people, and Saturn represents the suffering masses. The fact that Moon draws favour from both Jupiter and Uranus implied that people will muster the courage necessary to come out in protest. And, that Saturn locks horn with its dire enemy, Mars, gave enough hints that the country was due for open protest, putting the Government in the docks. Neptune again afflicting finance indicator Venus meant that the protest will be directed against incessant financial bungling. However, the fact that Judicious Jupiter and Uranus lend positive support to the Moon means that whatever may happen, it will be for the good of the country and the people.

In the above context, the astrological chart corresponding to the lunar eclipse, sighted in the night of 15/16 June, does also need a look in continuation with the New Year chart. For, eclipse charts serve as pointer to the events likely to follow in the emerging times in mundane terms, which further reaffirmed continuance of the above process. The eclipse falls on the 4th-10th axis over natal Uranus in nation’s Independence chart, indicative of mass agitation rocking the polity. The 10th sub-lord, Rahu has linkage to the 3rd, 5th, and 9th cusps - the three houses detrimental to the 10th - to mean that the Government, because of its own self-undoing acts, shall get badly discredited. Here again, Mars is placed adverse to Saturn, and Venus crosses path with Neptune. And, the inevitable is very much in evidence.

Coincidently, both during Annas April fast and the ongoing one, Mercury -, the planet identified with logical thinking - has been in retrograde motion. That calls for introspection by both the Government and agitating leaders over their approach to the issue for reasoned change in stance, in the larger interest of the nation.

The first motion to skim off the scum that has been set into motion is likely to stretch further, forcing necessary correction. For, a better face of India is likely to emerge post September 2012, when body-less Rahu joins headless Ketu’s longitude in the nation’s Independence chart, to literally form a wholesome body.

Don't let negativity rule you

A large piece of conch shell came as a present. I used to blow it every morning and evening during my prayers. After sometime I felt like cleaning it. So, I immersed it in salted water for a while to realize later that lot of small holes had appeared. The gummy material which was used to fill in the holes got washed out. Thereafter, the conch shell could not bring out the Om sound it resonated earlier, and turned into just a show piece. However, if those holes are somehow covered up once again, it will regain its relevance.

Ordinary human minds too present themselves almost on similar lines. They carry over imprints of acquired virtues as well as flawed perceptions and a stockpile of grudges from their previous births. These account for one’s potential and negative tendencies as reflected in one’s desire trends and functional-behaviuor. Quantitatively, the negatives may be relatively lesser than the positives. However, in applied terms, the negatives prove heavier over the potentials. For, where as the negatives always remain in active play, the potentials will not unfold to its best unless conducive ground is made available through well-reasoned, well-planned, sincere & sustained efforts, and with patience.

It is the reasoning part where the catch really lies. For, the negatives remain always available with the Manasa (the sense-driven mind), which performs all frontal actions of mind. Naturally, one gets tempted to look at the field experiences within the limits prescribed by the negatives. What further compounds the problem is our ego, which identifies itself with what is seen, and taking it on its face value, believes it to be true. The ego therefore, does not feel the necessity of involving our Buddhi (the faculty of discriminate intelligence). As a result, the frontal mind does not allow any scope for its most potent side, which remains the prerogative of the inner-frame of mind, come into play, with obvious implications. Remember, one needs to put in all the resources in hand and strive hard to create something. But one slippage on the way, and the whole game plan could go haywire.

Here is a case in point of a young married girl who is going through a trying time, because, she has failed to put her sensible mind to rightful use. Venus, the lord of her Taurus lagna is placed adverse to mischievous Neptune, which implies that she is caught in a world of self delusions and thereby she moves directionless. The Sun, too, is under adverse influence of Neptune that makes her an escapist, devoid of practical sense. Moon is placed adverse to the planet of limitation, Saturn, which accounts for her preconditioned mind. Intelligence signifying Mercury is oriented adverse to Mars, which accounts for her restless and fragile mind, makes her bad tempered, irritable, hypercritical and argumentative.

Wisdom giving Jupiter crosses path with Uranus that makes her headstrong, rebellious, opinionated, tactless, and the one who may exaggerate issues beyond their due. To sum up, all coordinates that would influence the mind appear to be flawed. As a result, she is not able to comprehend the issues in hand in right perspective, and therefore, she is not able to deal with them intelligently and appropriately.

The potentials, too, are no less. Her Moon is favourably placed with Jupiter, Mercury, and Neptune. They together, account for a fertile mind, vision, foresight, imagination, and excellent communicative skill. The Sun being favourably oriented with Saturn brings in excellent organising skill. However, the fact that the frontal side of her mind does her better side in check, so far, she has not been able to cash in her virtues even the least.

It is still not late for her to work upon her frailties without further loss of time, and I am sure, tomorrow shall be hers.

Astrology expands freedom

Astrology is one of the most misunderstood subjects. A good majority of people think that it is a blind belief-driven predictive discipline, which defines and binds one to the limits of destiny. Sceptics, scared of losing their sense of freedom, evidently denounce it in full force. What they are not aware of is that Astrology is not restrictive, it, rather expands the scope of one’s power of freewill.

Fact of life is that although seeds of freedom are ingrained in human construct, seldom people use it rightfully. For, we are all born with a bag full of impressions carried over from previous birth, which condition our minds one way or the other and which restrict the scope of our vision and freedom.

It is here that Astrology works wonders. It helps identify one’s strengths and weaknesses. Having thus identified one’s weaknesses, it would be possible to consciously work upon them and thereby expand one’s scope of freedom.

There are another set of people who are blind fatalist. They believe that there exists some extraterrestrial existence called God, who sits on judgment for all our doings and un-doings, and adjudicates the course of our destiny. They ardently believe in what is scripted in their charts. They prefer taking recourse to all belief-driven practices to appease the concerned deities and seek remedy for any evil likely to visit them in future. They seldom care to work upon their frailties. And, when they fail in life, they seek refuge in the call of destiny.

They, however, forget that the only permanent thing in this transitory world is the process of change. So, how can destiny be unchangeable? Remember, what we commonly understand as ‘destiny’ is nothing but reflection of the impressions in our minds, which we carry over from previous birth. We are also privileged with the power of freewill, duly armed with the faculty of discriminate intelligence. Applying this virtue, one could identify and address the inherent weaknesses, and make necessary amends in the destiny-trends.

Here is the case of a highly ambitious person, and also a potential guy, who could make it big in life. He has been tirelessly working towards that end. Yet, he is nowhere close to his desired destination. For, a blind fatalist that he is, he has not cared to work upon his frailties. He rather preferred visiting all the temples in the country seeking divine boon. Astrology freak, he has not spared any astrologer worth the name trying to figure out the probable time when his wish shall be granted. The result is that he got several opportunities, but he could not hold on long simply because of his attitudes.

Let us first look at the positives in his chart. The planets to be marked are: Jupiter trine to the Sun, Neptune and Saturn; Moon sextile Jupiter; and Mercury trine to Uranus. That brings in full load of virtues: A natural appeal, leadership abilities, fertile brain, vision, inventive and innovative mind, oratorical skill.

The negatives, too, are no less. In this respect the pointers are as follows: Uranus placed adverse to the Sun, Moon, Saturn and Neptune; Jupiter crossing path with Mars; Saturn’s restrictive influence on both the Sun and the Moon. The implication is that he has a mercurial temperament, is habitually critical of others, could defy elders, lives in a world of self-delusion, he is high strung, argumentative, and is tactless.

The paradox is that whenever he has been without any position, his better side remains operative. However, the moment he gets an opportunity, his negatives begin to dominate him.

To sum up, we do not succeed or fail in life because our destinies are so scripted. If we fail, it is because we fail to unfold the best in us.

Shiva and the philosophy of life

Nature presents itself as the most complex model of structured management with no scope to ever find any parallel. The system has been on its spontaneous run, following an involuntary intelligent design since time incomprehensible, carrying on continued and successive course of creation, sustenance and recycling. This has been possible, for its constituents remain in perfect harmony and balance.

Here again, the existential order on planet earth is laid down on similar grounds as nature, which drives it. So is the living order comprising of innumerable species set into an interdependent structure. In this scheme of things, no creature, including human being, is born self sufficient, and all participants, knowingly or unknowingly, have to stand in support of the larger existence so as to secure existential needs of every individual. Evidently, but for one, the very existence would be at stake. It therefore, becomes a compulsive necessity to follow nature’s model and be in harmony with each other, whether it is societal, corporate, or family governance.

The fact of life is that all creatures, but for human beings, have been spontaneously discharging their assigned functions in a giving mode. For, they are bound to a nature driven preset design, with no scope to make any exception. However, when it comes to human beings, a cloud gets cast on what could be termed as Universal law of existence – existential need of living in harmony with the larger existence. For, desire-driven man works more often than not in a demanding mode. On top of that, human being on the strength of power of freewill enjoys a choice option, whereby one could act to one’s asking. Naturally, when every one gets centred to one’s individualistic aspirations, there has to be conflict of interest, and they will be working at cross purposes. No wonder, chaos prevails all around for one reason or the other. It needs no elaboration that if there is free for all, the world is going to collapse, sooner than later.

Ancient Indias learned masters had very much visualised this possibility, which is why they thought of educating people well in time. Accordingly, they dedicated the month of Shravana every year for being reminded about the existential need of living in harmony with the larger existence, overriding all individual limitations. They look up to Lord Shiva and his marriage party as the symbol to drill in every mind the dharma of collective existence. Applied in practical terms, the message portrayed by this symbolism embodies in it the philosophy of governance.

Lord Shiva is perceived seated on an ox, presiding over an assortment of all possible forms of existence - human, non-human, and even weird creatures. Shiva here stands for the one at the head of things. His entourage symbolises in larger sense multitude of species in existence, and in terms of a productive unit, assortment of manpower having varied skill sets. Shiva, despite evolutionary barrier of incommunicability amongst the varied creatures forming His entourage, always remains in accord with all of them through his selfless force of love.

He overlooks their individualistic vagaries and does not differentiate between them. And, He does that purposely. For, He knows that all creatures by themselves are imperfect, but when put together, they make out a perfect world/a composite productive team. If each of them have their limitations, they are simultaneously also armed with virtues and attributes necessary to sustain collective existence. He naturally wished to get the best out of one and all, which is why He ignored the individual limitations of His courtiers. Lord Shiva could successfully hold His fort together as He remains selfless, and thus enjoys the confidence of all.

I wish that the concept of “Unity in Diversity” dawns upon those engaged in Governance.

Be alert to combat corruption

“Seeing is, not always believing”.  This is particularly true about human minds and their behaviour.  For, human mind is a very complex set up which, aided by its power of freewill, can take peculiar turns.  It may make projections, which could be quite at variance with some hidden agenda playing from behind within deep layers of mind.  The paradox, however, is that those not immediately affected by such projections take things at face value.  Naturally, the underlying intent will elude their perception.

In one such media projection, I came across a very amusing piece of news.  It talked about how some people working in the Central organisations and Corporate sector, drawing fat salary, were opting for State Civil Services for a much lesser package, seeing the improved work atmosphere in Bihar.

The question now is: Do these so-called Good Samaritans really wish to serve the cause of the state? It does not seem so.  Their stand would have had a meaning, if the state was bereft of the talent necessary to man those placements.  The obvious implication is that since the state has been witness to a good flow of funds towards development projects, it offers a good ground for the drivers of the projects to serve their vested interests.  It does not point to a very healthy trend, given the hullabaloo about corruption in the country.

In the above context, it will be interesting to look at the astrological pointers in the chart of a man willing to join the State Civil Services in Bihar.  The man is born in Cancer lagna with headless Ketu placed therein.  That speaks of the deceptive character of the man.  The lagna-lord Moon in the 10th house identical with the fiery sign Aries, is conjunct the planet of limitation Saturn, both placed adverse to Rahu-Ketu.  The implication is that he is highly ambitious, impulsive, aggressive, irritable, rash, and brash.  He seems to have mean tendencies and has a complex character.  Mercury, the planet of intelligence is locked in adverse formation with mischievous Neptune pointing to the fact that he would be scheming and a habitual liar.  The Sun is placed adverse to Jupiter to mean that he has a swaggering ego, and would be self-indulgent.  This, when read together with his mean tendencies as highlighted above, as also the placement of Moon in Aries, implies that he can take extreme steps, to serve his vested interest.

Also, his lagna sub-lord, Saturn, identified with the basic orientation of his self, is placed in the constellation owned by finance signifier Venus, which is placed adverse to the prime mover, the Sun.  That points to his penchant for money and all the material comforts of life.  Restive Rahu, the sub-lord of 3rd cusp identified with baser mind, is posited in the constellation owned by Mars, a planet having a very strong material orientation.

To sum up, this man, in a planned move, is prepared to comprise with his income through fair means for greener pastures in life.  It will be also possible for him to display his ego before his near and dear ones, which is lacking since his stay away from the home state.

For a State, the hidden agenda of a single person hardly matters.  Nor is it important to point fingers to a particular media projection, even if it is intended to please the ruling clique.  The basic point of consideration here is that unless we are on full mental alert about such vultures, and check their entry, it will be difficult to combat corruption.

Set your priorities right

Energy streams once excited, following entropy at the primordial-source, have progressively evolved all through their run to manifest the plural world with all its diversity and enormity. The entire course of evolution till the emergence of human beings has been an involuntary act. Naturally, the urge to evolve must have found its imprint at all stages of progressive evolution, for it to follow its next course. Evidently, this urge to evolve finds scripted in human design as well.

However, with the coming into being of the man, the course of evolution takes a new track. As hereafter, the course of evolution is subject to conscious efforts. For, human beings are endowed with the power of freewill, duly aided by the faculty of discriminate-intelligence, whereby one could guide his/her action by choice and discrimination. Naturally, it becomes the human prerogative, whether to evolve further or remain stuck to one’s past.

Here again, it is worth noting that enjoined in the spirit of freedom, inherent in human beings, is the choice to either misuse the freedom, or expand one’s reach through its rightful application. The question now is: What could thwart the urge to evolve further? The answer lies in the habit tendencies imprinted deep inside the mind, which influence all actions on our part. One does not need to consciously invoke them. They spontaneously overtake our thought process. Therefore, more often than not, we unknowingly get carried away by them. These tendencies, particularly the negative ones, condition our minds so much that our vision gets narrowed down to our preconceived notions. As a result, we fail to explore beyond the already known and attained,  and our evolution gets stalled.

It, therefore, becomes incumbent upon us to keep watch on the habit tendencies right from early childhood and work upon them in time. It is desirable even more so during the early adulthood. For, that remains a very tricky age. The spirit of freedom works heavy at this age. Driven by their instinct, majority of the youths begin to exert their freedom beyond its limits, many a times even losing the sense of decency. In their youthful spirit, they forget that they still lack the experience, maturity, and the exposure, necessary to be fully unto oneself. On top of that, their impressionable minds remain vulnerable to get caught up in the glare and dazzle of seeming realities so much that the underlying truths take a backseat. And, they are not able to visualize things in long term perspective.

Let us see how a young boy having the capacity to rise to great height through sustained efforts, has not been able to set his priorities right because of his habit tendencies. His lagna lord Venus, incidentally the finance indicator also, is locked in adverse formation with Mars, the planet which provides drive, as also with the mind indicator Moon, which is exalted. That brings in penchant for money as he carries the urge to get rich quick. What he is not aware is the fact that the prime mover, the Sun, is in rapt conjunction with the planet of limitation, Saturn. It implies that he is due for slow and steady growth through sustained hard work.

He is, however, in no mood to listen to elderly counsel because of his attitude. Instead of working towards developing his skills, he wishes to rush through a business venture. But he fails to realise that as of now, he lacks the mental discipline, patience, perseverance, expanse of vision, and sense of accommodation, necessary for successfully running a business enterprise. Moon placed opposite to Mars makes him temperamental, moody, impatient and irritable. Jupiter opposite Neptune binds him to self-assumed peculiar beliefs, makes him emotionally unstable, and shall be the cause of financial irresponsibility.

I wish he listens to counsel, gets focused to professional studies, and works upon his attitudes, before he thinks of a career.

Samskaras set the trend of life

Every human being born into this world is cast in a unique mould, quite different from all others, in terms of samskara one is born with. That is subject to further environmental influence. It could be further modified also, going through learning and unlearning lessons during the ongoing life, provided one consciously works towards that end.

Samskara is actually a stockpile of impressions of habit tendencies laid down in mind, both good and bad, carried from previous lives. That sets the premise on which one takes off in this life, in terms of one’s functional trends. And, that accounts for all the desire trends and attitudes in life.

Naturally, if negatives weigh heavier than the positives, the journey of life will be painful. For, it may impair one’s perceptive and comprehensive abilities so much that the very thought-process may go haywire. It, therefore, becomes incumbent upon us to reflect upon one’s basic fabric of mind, identify the negative trends in particular, and make necessary corrections in time. Otherwise, the negative imprints in mind may offer strong resistance to the potential side from unfolding to its best. That is why, in the ancient Indian tradition, so much of importance had been given to building up right samskara from the very childhood.

In todays time, we are so much caught up in the aspirations of the seeming world that we seldom care to set the basic premise right. The result is there for all to see. Every individual is centred to the self, not bothered about even the close ones, and the least of all collective existential needs. Families are breaking. Children are in stress because of turbulence in the house. The whole society is literally in a chaos.

A case in point is that of a couple married for almost 8 years now. Both of them are caught up in their self-delusion so much that they have been fighting from the very beginning on any count and every count. Stuck to their own ground, they are not able to find a way out. And, their life has become miserable. The worst part is that in the melee, their poor child is suffering for no fault of his.

The man is born in Virgo lagna. Its lord, Mercury, is placed adverse to both Mars and Jupiter. The implication is that he is impatient, restless, bad tempered, irritable, suffers from 'I-am-the-only-right-person' syndrome, and would be habitually critical of others. Jupiter being placed adverse to Mars accounts for his inflated ego, whereby he is stuck to his self-defined limits, and is not open to listening. Mischievous Neptune locked in adverse formation with mind indicator, Moon, and intellectually ordained Uranus account for his impaired psychic faculties, self-delusion, and day dreaming. Prime mover, the Sun, is placed adverse to the planet of limitation Saturn, which brings in negative orientation of mind. And, on top of that, Saturn conjunct headless Ketu makes him an escapist, distancing him from ground realities.

To contrast that, wifes samskaras are no better. Moon is placed adverse to Mercury, Neptune, and Jupiter. That makes her high strung, resentful of others, and would live in self-delusion. Mercury is also afflicted by Saturn and Neptune, being responsible for her impaired reasoning, single-track mind, and her negative attitude towards others. Jupiter unfavourably placed to Uranus and Neptune makes her headstrong, rebellious, opinionated, subject to peculiar beliefs, emotionally unstable, who may exaggerate issues beyond their due. Uranus again placed adverse to Neptune account for her impaired psychic faculties.

To sum up, the thought process of both has become incoherent, demanding therapy. But, both being inherently escapist, they have been evading truth. I wish, they listen to reason and work upon themselves, following which, their good side will unfold. And, their life will turn into a beautiful experience.

Infuse values in future leaders

We seem to have entered a fast track age in terms of our approach to life.  Everybody is in a hurry.  Most of us seem to be driven by the urge to achieve our aspirational urges in the quickest possible time, be they materialist or moralist in nature.  Those caught up in materialist bind wish to grow rich quick.  In their rush to serve their selfish motives, they often get tempted to adopt even unbecoming means.  No wonder, the nation has fallen into a deep-rooted corruption net, baffling every conscientious mind.

The paradox is that the self-anointed arbiters of nation’s destiny, passionately spearheading tirade against corruption too are looking for quick-fix solutions.  In their rush to force their elitist ideas, they seem to have lost sight of the fact that seeds of corruption dwell in our minds, which, sooner or later may sprout, given the right opportunity.  Remember, the world is a projection of our minds.  How a human mind perceives things, and the way thoughts flow, are what drive a man’s conduct.

Therefore, if the demonic corruption is to be addressed, we shall have to strike it at its base.  Cosmetic changes can do no good.  In the earlier ages, the princes – the future leaders in those days– were not allowed arms training until their Gurus were satisfied that ethical values were entrenched deep into their minds.  Mind it, Lord Vishnu is not going to reincarnate to select the ‘Mr. Perfect’ best suited for the post of Jan lokpal

It is still not late for us to seriously think about preparing our future generations.  It may take minimum 25 years for the first batch of well-bred future leaders to find entry into the system.  But, it is important to consecrate every emerging child the right way, but for which, necessary correction will remain a far dream.  Only a well guided generation can be expected to herald a systemic change.  Simultaneously, there has to be a sustained long-drawn apolitical social transformation movement.

Let’s analyse the case study of a person to see how seeds of corruption lying dormant for long in his mind, suddenly came into play when the right opportunity arose.  He had a clean image till the time he became the head of an educational institution, supposed to lead the emerging leaders the right way.  He enjoyed absolute financial powers. It is now a public knowledge how he then created a record of the sort in corruption by milking money whatever way possible.

He was born in Scorpio lagna, known for serving one’s self-interest.  The lagna sign and sub-lord Mars was placed in the 6th house in a highly ambitious sign Aries.  Mars is conjunct finance indicator Venus.  The two are placed opposite Karmakarak Saturn conjunct mischievous Neptune.  The implication is that he would be a highly materialist-minded person crazy about amassing wealth by whatever means possible.  He would be highly scheming having a mischievous mind.  Given an opportunity, such characters do not hesitate to wilfully adopt unfair means to serve their penchant for money so much that their ill-reputation could become a public knowledge.

The mind indicator, the Moon in exaltation - read together with the Sun conjunct Mercury - indicates that he has a fertile mind worth acquiring a position of eminence.  However, the fact that Moon is also locked in adverse formation to Saturn as well as Neptune will imply that he will love to misuse his position to his full advantage.  The Sun placed adverse to Jupiter implies that he is opinionated, not open to corrections.  The rest is there for all of us to bear with.  However, if there would have been any attempt to infuse a value system in him from early childhood, he would have probably done better.

Meditate to expand yourself

Thus far, we have had exposure to all aspects of mind-management. We also had a lesson in how to set free of all the preconditioning of minds, so as to prepare the ground for reinventing it afresh. It is time now to initiate steps towards a course correction from the base level, so that mind begins to work spontaneously to our best advantage. The process recommended is “Meditation”, which is an exercise driven towards wholesome personality building. It helps make necessary correction in the energy structure that makes out a man, and which also accounts for all aspects of a performing-self. In the process, character is built, strength of mind is increased, and intellect gets expanded, to together build a man, empowering an individual to take on the emerging challenges and opportunities intelligently with conviction.

Meditation, in the Indian tradition, involves two operating tools – Mantra to chant and a symbol to focus upon. These two respectively address the energy aspect and attitudinal trend of a person. In the energy frame, every individual is structured differently, which in applied terms finds reflection at the elemental level – Ākāś, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth, the five together supposedly constituting a human-self. The excess or void of one or the other micro-cosmic elements, determine which basic attribute – Sattva, Rajasa, or Tamas – would be prominently displayed on a person.

Sattva carries all the good tendencies – truth, purity, righteousness, and a dispassionate positive attitude. Tamasa, its corresponding opposite, account for all unbecoming trends – inertia, indolence, ignorance, suspicious, negativity, and lack of direction. Rajasa is the activating type, which, when working upon either Sattva or Tamasa, determines the inherent functional trait of a person. So, by addressing the imbalance, if any, in terms of one’s energy structure, the attitudinal flaws get corrected.

A mantra acts at the energy level.  This is nothing but a set of syllables placed in a logical sequence to create a particular sound effect. Every syllable recited generates echo from one or the other corresponding sensitive point within one’s body. That gets relayed through connecting nerves to excite brain cells. In turn, the brain cells find connect with the relative source in nature, matching to the wavelength and frequency of the echo generated. We are thus able to access extra energy from the higher pool of energy to our advantage. The repeated recitation of a mantra brings in a continued stream of energy into the system, to strengthen one’s energy structure.

The mantra has to be always individual specific, corresponding to the void area of energy within the self that can be figured out through one’s astrological chart. It may not be out of place to mention here that depending on the basic fabric of one’s making, an individual’s absorption level of different energies extended by nature varies. So, invariably, we are all born with energy imbalance in our system. And, it goes without saying that to be at our best, we need to harness energy in right proportion from different sources. For, energy available from every source carries its own stamping, in terms of its characteristic features, which has a corresponding reception point in the brain. And, every point of the brain administers set functions of the body, mind, and psyche. This is how these energies influence our lives. It therefore, becomes important to service our energy structure.

The symbol – deity as understood in the Indian context - over which one is to remain focused during meditation, carries a philosophic import corresponding to one or other human attribute. The related message acts as auto-suggestion, which purifies our thought process. Evidently, the symbol too has to be individual specific, in terms of specific attribute which needs to be addressed.

Please bear in mind that Meditation needs to be done under guidance of a proper Guru.

Philosophy is the guide of life

Picking up threads from the previous issue, the third step towards holistic management of mind, calls for philosophic understanding of life. Philosophic understanding does not mean being driven towards abstracts beliefs. It gives us exposure to such existential needs, as would be necessary for a smooth run of life in this complex world, with all its diversity and enormity. It often happens that as we get used to doing bigger things in life, we tend to forget the basics, as if we have outgrown their limits. So, we really need to keep ourselves reminded about the life’s basics, but for which we often lose our moorings.

We really need to be aware about our construct, individually and collectively. Being conversant with the system driving us, we can figure out how we fit into this scheme of things, so as to get the best out of them. Having already gone into individual construct of mind, it is time now to explore the world model. In this context, it will be worth giving a look into how the planetary kingdom, vital to our existence, operates in the cosmos.

The Moon has no light of its own. It reflects the light drawn from the Sun, but not before marking its own stamp, which is why it differs in its character from the source light. It is again the solar emissions that excite other planetary bodies drive varying energy streams routed through them. In a way, all the cosmic bodies forming the planetary orchestra are dependent on the Sun. All planetary bodies follow their individual specific trajectory moving at their respective speeds. They never interfere with each other’s axis, and yet they maintain their relativity as if they are moving as family. For, they all move around the Sun at the centre.

The Sun, by itself, cannot support life. It is only in togetherness with energies routed through other planetary bodies that it can nourish and sustain life on planet earth. The system as a whole has been in perfect balance all through its run and shall remain so till it survives. It has so existed because independent space has been available to all of them, allowing them to discharge their individual specific obligations unhindered, while at same time maintaining their collective obligations. And, in togetherness, they have been working in a giving mode supporting life mechanism on the earth.

Following the above blue print, the living world, too, is made out on the concept of unity in diversity. In this scheme of things, every individual is made out incomplete and imperfect by oneself, but together they make out an organic whole. It, therefore, becomes incumbent upon all of us to pursue our individual aspirations while remaining true to our obligations towards collective existential needs. Accordingly, we are to set terms of our inter-personal relationship skills.

In a case before me, a gentleman averse to the above model, and stuck to his egotistical self-acquired beliefs, many of which are illogical, has made his life a mess. In material terms, he has done extremely well. However, when it comes to his personal life, it is in turmoil. He has so far conducted his family as a despot, demanding total subservience from his wife and children, not allowing them any space. They all live in fear, which has thwarted their individual growth. Now that the children have grown up, they have mustered strength to challenge their father’s unnecessary commandments, at times getting belligerent. It has now become difficult for him to take it. He is clueless about how to tame them, and has become hypertensive, calling for medical support. I wish, he listens to counsel, and makes necessary amends without further loss of time, so that it does not become too late to recover.

Manage your mind holistically

Summing up all aspects of mind-play, it is clear that Mind is a very delicate instrument needing careful handling. For, on one hand, well-meaning thoughts flowing through mind, when steered rightly, may prove rewarding and fulfilling. On the other hand, mind can get into self-undoing acts, inviting pain and misery, if thoughts go misdirected.

So, the question is: How to steer such a fragile mind? The answer lies in mind-management through a fourfold approach.

First, regularly go for morning walk, or do some physical exercise out in open, with the rise of the Sun. This will help the body avail of vitamin ‘D’ available with early morning sunrays. That serves as food for the nerves, vital to all internal communications. It also strengthens the Pituitary gland, which, in turn, lends support to the whole lot of glandular orchestra for them to make available different hormones they secrete in the right proportion due. Remember, human body is the platform over which mind operates. Naturally the body-platform needs to be in shape, in full active mode, to offer suitable ground for the mind to have a smooth run.

Second, identify the preconditioning of mind if any, and resolve all negative imprints laid down there. That may help develop a positive outlook and have a hopeful mental disposition. We also need to detach ourselves from all the inconsequential thoughts, which unnecessarily clutter our minds, so as to enjoy expanded mind-space. It may be pertinent to note that we need to have enough of mind-space available, to process our thoughts objectively. Remember, we have to go through many unpleasant experiences in our day-to-day life, which keep filling our memory. These negative memories often unknowingly cloud our perceptions, and we fail to look at things rationally. Obviously, therefore, we become vulnerable to make unintelligent moves.

A simple way to deal with negative memories and inconsequential thoughts is to submit oneself to a regular mental exercise regime of 20 minutes a day. The process involves putting the conscious-mind into sleep-mode, so as to bring into play the sub-conscious mind, where lies all the memories of the past. With that, the memories laid down there begin to unfold one after another, drawing your attention. It then becomes possible for you to deal with them.

To put that process in place, lie down straight, but in a relaxed state, on a hard surface on the back (face up). That keeps straight the spinal-cord, the main internal communication channel. Now, close your eyes. Register in your mind that you wish to get away from all die-hard habits and attitudes, which often put you into a negative spin, and facilitate the true potential side becoming fully operative. This puts the conscious-mind, which bring into play inlaid traits, into a sleep-mode, making way for the sub-conscious taking over. Now, have slow, but deep, inhalation through the nose, followed by slow exhalation. Every time you inhale or exhale, mentally recite seed-syllables (Beeja-mantra) suggested for the two occasions.

The syllables will vary from person to person depending on his basic frame of mind, as also what faith one subscribes. The syllables should be preferably the ones suggested by a proper spiritual guide. Immediately, thereafter, the person will be flooded with volume of thoughts. Don’t get trapped into those thoughts. Try to remain a silent witness. It is, however, easier said than done.

To get over this problem, better keeping suggesting your mind this is not me. In a way you are trying to detach yourself from those inconsequential thoughts. You could be, at times, under a state of mental turmoil during the process, thanks to because of volumes of negative thoughts confronting you. But, the moment you come out of it, you may feel relaxed. You, thus, expand your scope of vision.

The power of astrology

The powers of mind are immense. If employed rightly and consistently, it empowers us do even unthinkable. If Einstein could come up with "Theory of Relativity", it was through his mind-play only. Our Rishis and Munis too could map out with precision, the design parameters laid down by nature, underlying our existential needs, by optimal use of their powers of mind only.

But then, there are spoilers too in the mind, with our egos often playing the devil. The fact of life is that usually, an ordinary mortal seldom remains conscious about keeping his/her ego in check. As a consequence, our egos continue breeding ill-conceived self-created beliefs, which condition our minds, limiting our perceptive and comprehensive abilities. That, in turn, corrupts our thought process, being the cause for all our self-invited pains and sufferings in life.

The question now is: How to overcome the limitations of our minds? Evidently, one needs to read his/her mind first for the sake of course correction. Conceptually, it may seem possible to use one’s power of freewill to identify one’s weaknesses by self- reflecting upon the usual mind-trends. But, seldom does ego allow a person to dispassionately get to the root of the problem. Secondly, there are many memory implants at deeper layers of mind that are difficult to gather by applying ordinary mental tools.

That calls for looking at alternative methods. The modern way of identifying one’s weaknesses could be psychological analysis. However, their usual analysis is limited to the visible trends. Not that they cannot reach out what's at the root of the problems which, given a small trigger, comes into play and derail us. But then, they may have to apply the tricky process of ‘hypnotism’ and put the person through the process of ‘regression’. The danger inherent in the process, however, is that some of those put through the process of 'regression may get stuck to some unpleasant memory from the past. In that case the person’s thought process may simply go crazy.

The safest method is offered by Astrology. In this scheme of things, the energy-mapping of the person at the time of one’s birth, as reflected by way of planetary placements, is to be assessed. It reflects upon the inherent trends a person carries from the previous birth. Further, a look into the progression of the planets during the ongoing life throws light at the turns these trends may take in future.  Accordingly, necessary corrective initiatives could be taken.

The zodiac houses to be watched for the purpose are the Lagna, the third, and the 9th. They respectively reflect upon a person’s individualistic nature, the inherent baser instincts, and the level of one’s consciousness. Benefic or malefic influences available to these houses will determine the inherent attributes and frailties if any.

The planets to be watched are distant planets, Uranus & Neptune, plus the slow moving planets namely - Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. Their alignment to individuality signifier, the Sun, indicate the basic conditioning of mind, both good and the bad. Their orientation to personality indicator Moon, and s the fast moving planets, Mercury and Venus give a clue about how the basic orientation of mind would manifest.

A case in point is that of a young man. In his chart, the Sun is in rapt conjunction with the planet of limitation, the Saturn. It implies that the person would have gone through difficult times in the past, and the related unpleasant experiences thereof exist at deep layers of his mind. That has brought in seeds of negativity and depression. Given a small trigger, those impressions could overtake his mind’s drive to his detriment. But, having identified that, necessary corrections could be made. There exist proven mental exercises to get over the past, and regain the normal frame of mind.

The organisation of Mind

Thoughts drive all actions performed by human beings. Therefore, thoughts need to be watched and steered well, so as to enjoy a smooth run of life. Invariably, most of the conscientious people are aware of this fact. Yet, they are not able to restrain ill-framed thoughts. Why? Here, a look into the organization of mind, which remains the breeding ground of all thoughts, becomes imperative.

There are four constituent faculties of mind – Chitta, Buddhi, Ahamkar, and Manasa.

The primary drive of Mind remains with the Chitta, which brings in the power of both perception and comprehension and make us feel about a thing or situation one way or the other.  It holds all experiences in our memory. It also animates all other faculties of mind.

Buddhi is discriminate intelligence, which processes data collected by Manasa (Sense-driven-mind), dispassionately analyses them and arrives at the right judgment. Accordingly, it directs all responses and actions on our part.

Ahamkar brings in the sense of “I” consciousness, whereby one self-acquires an identity differentiated from the others. Driven by this instinct, a person identifies himself with self-created beliefs cultivated in mind. This faculty again makes one commit himself to a purpose in life.

Manasa, does all the frontal actions on our part. Aided by 5 instruments of perception (sensory organs), it perceives all happenings in visible terms, and gathers all information pertaining to the phenomenal world. It can also look at the pros and cons of a subject taken on its face value and instinctively respond as well. But, by itself, it cannot discriminate upon a subject dispassionately. To sum up, it sails us through the experiences of life in practical terms.

All the above four are set into an inter-dependant framework. In this scheme of things all these faculties respectively discharge their assigned functions, as a part of collective arrangement. None of them have a reality devoid of the remaining faculties. Although, it is Chitta that animates the other three faculties of mind, it can act only upon the data fed by Manasa, by itself, or in league with the other two. Even Buddhi comes into play only when Manasa makes available outer field data to work upon. Together the four empower us with the capacity to sense, cognize, think, feel, and guide one’s actions by choice and discrimination.

In terms of normal design, the Manasa, when confronted with any field-data, forwards them to Buddhi for due discrimination. Buddhi, in turn, having made right judgment, directs the Manasa to act accordingly. Chitta and Ahamkar will continue to play their part in all these actions. Naturally, when these faculties work in perfect co-ordination, un-corrupted, they act spontaneously and effortlessly and arm us with tremendous power. They enable us to explore and comprehend, even beyond the known, improve upon our skills, and steer life to our best advantage. These faculties when employed rightly, and in perfect co-ordination, qualify us to turn life into a beautiful experience, with ease and comfort through our conscious efforts.

The paradox, however, is that because of choice option available with human mind, it becomes subject to relative perception, which makes one vulnerable to form diametrically opposite view of the same subject. If perchance, Ahamkar, happens to pick up a wrong lead, its self-acquired belief does not allow Buddhi come into play, and the man gets caught up in the seeming realities. And, for want of due diligence, the truths underlying the tangibles, often go unsighted, being the cause of all our woes.

Ordinarily, a normal human being, played upon by the Ahamkar, keep piling up many such ill-framed, self-created beliefs during the course of life. These beliefs condition our mind so much that a person sees a thing only in the frame of his pre-conceived notions. That in turn, causes to breed in ill-conceived thoughts. To get over this problem, one first needs to identify the undue conditionings of mind. How can we identify them?  We will discuss about it in the subsequent issue.

How we can guide our thoughts

Picking up the threads from the previous discussion, it comes out that the basic reason for stress is imperfection of our minds - our flawed perceptive and comprehensive abilities.  And, the imperfection owes its genesis to the content and character of impressions laid down in our minds.

Take the case of a saint and a criminal.  In deep slumber, neither of the two would remember who they are, nor, they remain conscious of their prime driving spirit.  The moment they wake up, the basic fabric of their minds, come into play.  And, they begin to conduct themselves in their respective ways.

The impressions in our minds are primarily stockpile of thoughts carried on from previous births, which is subject to further additions or modifications through learning and unlearning during the ongoing life. These thoughts involuntarily form individual-specific belief patterns that account for all our habits and desire-trends.  They, in turn, excite corresponding thoughts which, when gravitated further, translate into action.  Some of these beliefs could be flawed, which may tempt us pick up wrong lead, not suited to our contemporary needs.  These ill-framed imprints often cloud our sense of reasoning.

Now, with such a conditioned mind, the probability is that a person may fail to visualise the issues in hand in the right perspective.  That makes a person vulnerable to go wrong in articulating his/her actions and responses suiting the challenges of the emerging times.  As a consequence, what could have been easily dealt with and resolved, gravitate into problems, bringing mental discomfort.

Let us not forget that when we are all born imperfect and the future is full of uncertainties, nothing can come about easy in life.  Those who acknowledge this truth, invariably deal with problems in hand with an open mind, free from any preconditioning whatsoever.  They, therefore, are able to deal with emerging challenges nicely and emerge victorious.  But, those who remain stuck to their predetermined views and options, in most cases, prefer maintaining the status quo.  Such reservation for change simply points to the existence of the element of fear at the back of the person's mind.  Fear, one should know, is invariably a result of assumed thoughts guided by negative instincts picked up in the past.  And, that makes a person behave unintelligently.

Apparently, fear may pertain to uncertainties underlying impending change.  It, however, necessarily gets influences by some deep-seated negative impressions registered in the past.  That comes into play with the very sight of a probable change.  People under the influence of fear, instead of exploring the unavoidable with an open mind and facing it head on, try their best to evade change.  In the process, they keep loading themselves with unresolved problems, which over a period of time, becomes too heavy a burden on their lives.  What we usually forget in the usual scheme of things is the fact that change is an unavoidable ongoing process of this dynamic world, which cannot be reversed under any circumstances.

So, all about mind-play is nothing but projection of inlaid thoughts. Some of these thoughts, negative in character, often play the devil and given a trigger, excite our power of imagination in a way that drives a person into negative speculation, and he/she gets unnerved.

The question, therefore, is: how to manage our thought-process and keep stress away?  The answer again lies with the mind.  For, mind is empowered to reflect upon itself, and applying discriminate-intelligence, give it a positive turn.  It, therefore, becomes desirable for us is to watch and guide our thoughts well.

To sum up, reflect upon the following thoughts:

Watch your thoughts, they become words;/ Watch your words, they become action;/ Watch your actions, they become habit;/ Watch your habits, they become your character;/ Watch your character, it forms your destiny.

Renounce stress, be happy

Given a situation, real or assumed, if a person gets unnerved because of physical, mental, or emotional pressure, he is said to be under stress.

Stress invariably overtakes a person who is not able to deal with the usual challenges of life with ease and comfort. It may also strike upon a person who is left behind in the run of time, because, he fails to adapt himself to the varying expectations of the emerging times. The failure and frustration that follow, usually makes one feel mentally exhausted and physically incapacitated. Even those not being able to resolve psychological conflicts in mind – mostly involving assumed thoughts - become vulnerable to stress.

Stress, of late, seems to have grown out of proportion. Worse, even school-going children, who under normal circumstances are supposed to be happy-go-lucky, are not spared of this malady. The reason could be any - be it peer pressure, or inhospitable domestic atmosphere, which has become quite common lately. Once trapped into this predicament of mind, one looses a considerable sum of energy and mind-space, unnecessarily brooding and contemplating mostly inconsequential thoughts. One, thus, becomes short of vitals needed to attend to one's preferences, and the mind-space necessary to process thoughts objectively.

The truth of life is that we all begin with high hopes and aspirations. And, we wish to passionately pursue them blindfolded. In the process, we often forget that the world does not necessarily move to our asking. For, no motion could be ever put into effect without inviting resistance. We also lose sight of the fact that one has to necessarily deal with conflicting interests generated by an infinite variety of disparate people, all guided by their varied perceptions. For those who fail to keep this truth in mind, it becomes difficult to deal with the varied problems they face in their lives. It becomes still more difficult to digest failures and frustrations following thereafter. Such people come under stress.

Once a person is under stress, the balance of hormonal secretions from various glands in the body gets impaired. That upsets one's physiological status, and the person loses control over his mind. Eventually, the thought process becomes incoherent, with obvious ramifications. The person thus gets caught in a circuitous web of physiological-strain and mental-stress, often demanding medical intervention.

However, some of us are able to maintain our mental balance and remain focused, despite all odds. The weaklings are obviously more vulnerable to wilt under pressure. The question now is: how does response pattern of different people vary when confronted with similar situations?

Here, a look into the construct and flow chart of mind becomes pertinent. In our minds, it all begins with impressions laid down there, which hold the key to all our strengths and weaknesses, accounting for our varying responses.

It is important to note here that the impressions in mind relate to known facts of life. Evidently, its expanse will be limited. However, the dynamics of emerging moments vary widely. As a result, the emerging issues and situations have newer dimensions, with no parallel in the past. And, we have to deal with them.

However, the usual human tendency is to refer to past experiences, to find proper lead. As a consequence, we usually measure things within the frame of limited vision offered by our own past. What further complicates our thought process is that a human mind is guided by relative perception, which makes us vulnerable to form diametrically opposite view of the same thing. So, we fail to comprehend issues in hand in the right and due perspective. And, that becomes the precursor to stress.

Time is God

Time is the administering tool of God - goes the Indian belief.  For those who consider time just a measure of space, may just laugh off at this statement as a blind belief.  I wish to enlighten them that in astrological terms all units of time, both in macro and micro scales, are calibrated in correspondence with periodic motion of planets.  And, planets are energy providers always on the move at their own respective speed.  Relate that to earth’s motion, which spins at such an enormous speed that it makes one rotation every 24 hours.  It simply implies that the sum total of energy flux excited by nature varies widely every moment.  Time, therefore, is a measure of varying energy flux made available to the planet earth, with its related ramification in terms of individual and collective happenings.  And, every moment of time, being a stepping stone for the next ones, has in store how energy framework is likely to evolve in the coming moment.  That is the basis of astrological predictions.

See how the astrological chart drawn to figure out the prospects of becoming Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, also simultaneously indicated his violent death later.  The case relates to Dorji Khandu, who died in a helicopter crash on 30th of April.  When the chopper carrying him went missing, one of his well wishers called me up late in the night to figure out the prospects of his survival.  At 22:57 hours, randomly selecting 151 as the referral number, I drew a chart of the moment.  In the Krishnamurthy system of Horary Astrology, numbers starting from 1 and ending up with 249 are respectively assigned specific location in an astrological chart, which is taken as the lagna.  The life indicator, lagna sub-lord, headless Ketu, indicated being clueless about his survival.  The death indicator 8th sub-lord was Kaal denominator Rahu, which being posited in the constellation owned by Ketu, and thereby linked to the lagna, meant death.

My association with late Dorji Khandu dates back to 28th March 2007.  He had come with a specific query: Whether he could replace the then long reigning Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh.  His date and time of birth were not known.  So, I drew a Horary Chart at the moment of his query.  Lagna lord, Moon, was placed in his lagna itself, duly supported by benevolent Jupiter, which implied that he carried the promise of coming in public limelight in strong terms.  The 4th lord, Venus, identified with popular support was in the 10th house, synonymous with power and position.  It implied that he was promised of popular support to achieve a high position. The Sun, symbolic of the ruler placed in the 9th house signifying destiny, was also duly supported by Jupiter.  Longitudinally, the Sun had to move 12 degrees in the next 12 days to be exactly trine to benevolent Jupiter for his wish to find fruition.  11th sub-lord, Venus, being in its own constellation in forward motion, promised fulfillment of desire.  The fact that a movable sign Cancer was rising, meant that the results will be available within days.  And, true to the indications, he was sworn in as Chief Minister on the 9th April.

Taking the above chart, as a point of reference, let us figure out whether, his violent death was also due sometime later.  Death indicator 8th lord, Saturn, was in the lagna, conjunct the lagna lord Moon, and opposite its dire enemy, the violent Mars, which was conjunct unpredictable Neptune.  That indicated violent death under most unusual circumstances.  On the day of accident, Moon, identified with gross-body in astrological terms, was transiting exactly over soul-indicator, the Sun, in the above referral chart.  Saturn was transiting bang opposite them that cut off his lifeline.

I wish and pray that late Dorji Khandu’s soul rests in peace.

Face challenges to remain strong

No motion can ever come into effect without inviting resistance.  Naturally, the Universe, being always in motion at a steady pace, is bound to meet with resistance on its way.  The world has to still keep marching ahead, transcending all resistance.  The question now is: how does a massive organisation such as the Universe, with all its enormity and diversity, take care of the resistance it encounters?

What if resistance turns into strength?  That is the beauty of the cosmic world. For, it is the mutual gravitational pushes and pulls of the field players (planets, stars, etc), that maintain the cosmic world in an orderly state.  These gravitational forces not help a cosmic body to maintain a steady pace, but also keep them in perfect balance.  Seen in practical terms, resistance offered by gravitational pull, holds the key to a fundamental unity underlying all field players in the cosmic world.  For, that holds together all the cosmic players as a part of a self-automated process.  That is why, the Universe is said to be one intelligent and integrated whole.  The fact of life is that all the field players in the cosmos are all set into an interdependent and integrated framework, each playing its bit in support of others.  Otherwise, the cycle of life will not be complete.

It is because of the fact that all cosmic-players have been at peace and harmony with each other, being in perfect balance since time immemorial, that the whole existential world has survived so far, and shall continue its journey unabated.  Another factor that needs to be taken into account is that all of them have been following a self-automated preset design, respectively acquired by them, with no scope for any digression.

The human world, being a dynamic unit of the Universe, too, is supposed to work on the above lines only, but with a difference.  Unlike the cosmic players, man’s actions are desire driven, and are not bound by any predetermined course, as he enjoys a choice.  Accordingly, a man himself, rightly or wrongly, sets the course of his journey of life.  And, when there is a choice, the scope of relative perception comes into play, which is vulnerable to arousal of conflicting ideas and interests.  As a result, even problems encountered during man’s journey of life are all man made – be it of one’s own making, or, those posed by others.

However, unlike the cosmic world above, where resistance actually turns into strength, desire driven and comfort loving man, does not wish to take pain kindly.  So, when confronted with adverse circumstances, man comes under stress, which in turn, further restricts his sense of reasoning, thereby limiting his sense of objectivity.  Not only that, stress, if severe, at times, a person’s physiology also gets affected, calling for medical intervention.

The wise, on the other hand, take very kindly every oddity and hazard coming his/her way as a matter of routine.  They treat the problems as lessons of life.  They try to learn and grow out of them.  This approach makes it still easier for them to deal with challenges posed by the dynamics of emerging times.

A gentleman - in whose chart, Mercury, the planet of objective thinking, is clouded by mischievous Neptune, and restive Rahu - used to live in a world of self-delusion.  As a consequence, he often picked up inappropriate leads and land up in serious problems.  Later, when he turned to spirituality, he realised his folly.  He worked upon his frame of mind.  And now, his innovative and inventive mind has come into full play, coming as it may with the Sun drawing favour of intellectually ordained Uranus.  He now successfully counsels and helps others come out of their problems.

Whether God Exists Or Not

Bharat Bhushan Padmadeo

Does God exist? This controversy has been raked up yet again, this time by legendary theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow in their new book, ‘The Grand Design’. “God did not create the Universe and the ‘Big-Bang’ was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics. The fact that there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist.” The concept they talk about, which they have named as ‘M-theory’, makes Creator of the Universe redundant.

The oldest debate

The debate on the existence of God is as old as human existence itself. In the Indian context, many schools of philosophy that do not accept the authority of the Vedas do not acknowledge the existence of God. Even the Sankhya system, which otherwise acknowledges the authority of the Vedas, does not accept God as Creator.

Be that as it may, questions about the existence of God only enhance the credibility of the Vedantic concept of Advaita or non-dualism.  Advaita, like science, holds the view that the manifest plural world with all its enormity and diversity is a reflection of a singularity - that there is a singular source of all animate and inanimate objects.

Coming back to the main question: Are the scientists saying that the universe sprang out of nothing? Doesn’t contemporary physics begin and end with the Big-Bang theory? Then why close a question that almost wills itself to remain: no rational mind must accept the argument that anything beyond one’s mental comprehension is non-existent.

Importantly, most scientists from the West speak from a perspective that includes an exposure to a Christian concept of God. Christianity assigns God an exclusive identity, different from the manifest, and which is not and cannot be accepted as the material cause of creation. Physics, on the other hand, hypothesises that all fundamental forces in nature, responsible for the making of this universe, must have existed in unified state before they came into play.

Laws of Physics

Can we deploy the laws of physics to discover answers to questions about how the universe came into being? The laws of physics continue to evolve, and often they are at complete variance with the past findings. Physics has undergone several tectonic shifts since Newton gave us the laws of Gravitation and Einstein his theory of relativity. The laws underwent further changes when it emerged that the laws defining motion of gross bodies in the cosmos do not apply to the flight of energy particles at the sub-atomic level.

And now physics has added a new twist with its disagreement with Einstein’s equivalence principle, which states that the laws of physics are the same everywhere. John Webb of the University of New South Wales in Australia presents evidence to suggest that the laws of physics are not the same everywhere. Seen in practical terms, so far the laws of physics stand out as partial theories -- these are still in search of a closure that Hawkings seems to be thrusting upon his readers.

The laws of physics may be able to partly explain the cosmos. But, so far, physics has not been able to establish a correlation between the primal source and man.  Science fails to establish a continuum between the source and the manifest in practical terms; findings of physicists become abstract academic exercises.

Vedantic Non-dualism

Perhaps, an insight into the Vedantic concept of non-dualism, read along
with the energy principle within the concept of Aum, may suit scientific minds better. For, it conforms to the three postulates of physics – Beginning from a singularity, Spontaneity, and Chaos.  The Vedantic concept acknowledges the existence of one and only primordial source -- the boundary-less singularity, with no beginning or end -- which remains the efficient and material cause of creation. In un-manifest state, it is perceived as being without form or perceptible attribute, but not without content. Evidently, such a state could be possible within the energy framework alone, so the primordial source is something like an energy-whole.

Vedanta describes Aum as pranava or primal sound associated with the first motion at the primal source, following causal stress thereon.  Causal stress increases, and becomes dense, and which when centralises the energy trinity (identified with  'A',  'U',  and  'M' constituting  Aum), gets excited with a roaring sound “Hum”, a concept close to scientific perception; physicists acknowledge sound vibrations along with matter and light at the core of the universe. If the primordial source is taken as an energy whole, then it has to be a gigantic pool of unknowable quantities of energy particles. And with causal-stress, because of mutual attraction among energy particles, the physical universe -- very much in accordance with the laws of physics -- is set into motion.

The Primal Source

The constituents at the primordial source, with their respective attributes, are so evenly balanced in their un-manifest form that they do not reflect any perceptible attribute. A particular mix of these constituents is evident in a person, and accounts for his individual specific traits. Second, the “consciousness element” emanating from the primal source, acting upon the particular energy platform identifiable with an existence, defines the varied dynamism of all beings.

In fact, the energy constituents and the consciousness element together hold the key to unity underlying all existences, and hence the continuum between the source and its manifest. In this light, the world becomes intensely interlinked; no individual component has an identity independent of the whole. With the power of free will, man can guide his actions by moral and ethical choices and even influence the environment through his efforts.

As the Mother, the spiritual associate of Sri Aurobindo wrote, “Without Him, I exist not; without me, He is un-manifest.” Such is the continuum between the primal source and man. Evidently, therefore, a knowledge that does not fully explain the complex inter-play between the two can never satisfy the searching mind.

Who or What is God?

In such a complex set-up, who or what is God? It is not a Person. However, God is ever-personalising in the form of all individual things in the world. Or it can be called the aggregate of all such personalities everywhere in the Universe. And, it can be said to have a persona in the sense that the energy constituents emerging there-from find reflection in terms of varying attributes in a man.

God is the phenomenon called the world. God is completeness, constituting the source, the manifest, and the laws driving this mechanism individually and collectively, including the functionalities of man. And, Godliness is exploring the unity underlying all existences. In pursuing this line of gnosis, one realises that the world is an organic whole, where all constituents discharge their tasks in support of each other, and that the efforts of all put together carry forward this dynamic world. It then becomes possible to realise that we need to be in harmony with our internal as well as external worlds. The domain of God is therefore, far wider than the abstract laws of physics, vital to our qualitative existence in holistic terms.
